Hiya,

With my dogs, I always let there vaccine boosters lapse a little as I firmly believe they do not require doing every year. I can't afford to have them all titre tested and so have always had them done approx every 18months. I've telephoned the vets to book them in and they said its been 18months since Roxy's last vacc and 15months since Rio's and if I bring them in they'll want to re-start the course (i.e. vacc > 2wks > vacc) and I am really  >:D I don't want to start them again, its way overkill, its more expensive and they do not need it, they're sure to be covered from the last one and just need a booster. I can't see (other than titre test) of getting round this. I've heard on here of some vets that only vacc every 3yrs - how do I find out who and where these vets are as I'm much prefer this in the long run.

Sorry its a bit of a rant, just not sure what to do!

I forgot Bailey's vaccination last year due to us moving I think  :-\ the reminder from the vet must have gone to the other house even though we redirected our mail  :-\

We had to have the 2 vaccinations again but vet did give me a whole 5% off  :005:

If they use Nobivac they only need them 3 yearly.

Except for Parainfluenza and Lepto which is given yearly as a booster.

I'm fairly sure you can request just to have the booster and the vets can then write something on the clinical notes along the lines of 'client requested to have booster only despite being advised to re-start course'.

Dallas ( 10) & Disney ( 9 )

Playing at the Bridge: Brook (13/06/04), Jackson (23/12/05) & Vegas (14/07/10)

That's what I did with William when I left him 18 months between vaccinations. The vet said he recommended starting a new course but didn't push it.

My lot have norbi and the vets here insist on it being done yearly, but my new vet will do 3 yearly - but there is something they insist on doing yearly but can't remember what it is (think it lepto) i trust my new vet 100% as they actually take the time to listen to me and advise but in the end they always say it is my decision

If you are on Norbi I would take the info in the link down to them and inform them you only want the booster and not the full set

Are any of your local vets participating in the amnesty? You only have to pay the price of a booster for the full course. It's this month. Ours do it in Rutland every year (I had my four cats re-done last year). http://www.vaccinationmonth.co.uk/

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. I'll see if I can sign something to say I'm aware of the lapse etc but just want a booster.

No, ours aren't participating, but thank you for the suggestion  The other thing is, I do think its overkill that they insist on the full course as they're only a few months overdue when its been proven that they're immune for a lot lot longer.

Totally agree about the overkill. That's why I take advantage of the amnesty - with the cats I wait three years then get them started over because they won't just give the booster; the dogs I keep up to date just in case they ever need a kennel. I do hate pumping them full of chemicals though, and wish we could get an honest and definitive answer to what they REALLY need rather than what the drug companies choose to tell us  >:(

TBH I don't see how they can insist, when you are the paying customer and you can just tell them what you want or don't want  ;)
I don't think its just that they are immune for a lot longer, i think its also about the risks of auto immune disease.  I for one would just ask your vet to titre instead and you will probably find out they are well covered anyway  :D

I'm on a 3 year schedule but it depends on the type of vax (mine is nobivac) + its not a case though of boosters every 3 years as they are however vaxed every year with just the lepto part

Daisy's annual booster was due around the time her pups were born so my vet told me to wait and advised that there was no problem with it lapsing a couple of months.
