Blackthorn and sloe berries
« on: March 21, 2011, 07:07:43 PM »
Can anyone tell me if the Blackthorn's sloe berries are poisonous to dogs?
Have googled for the information, but am struggling to find exactly what I'm looking for.

Lola hasn't eaten any - its just the blackthorn is just so pretty at the moment, I would like one for the garden, but obviously the berries could be an issue.

I've googled too and can't find anything apart from a warning that the thorns are particularly nasty ones for both people and animals, plus the fact that it's considered unlucky to bring blackthorn blossom into the house.

Not sure if they are poisonous to dogs or not but I doubt that many dogs would eat them - they are very bitter and taste horrid unless they are put in a bottle with lots of gin and sugar  :shades: :005:  The thorns are evil though  >:(  There are loads of blackthorn bushes round here and Coco has been sloe picking with me many times and although she is the greediest dog in the world she has never tried to eat any  :P :005:

Although it is good for hedgerows, I wouldn't have one in the garden either - they are very invasive and it took a digger ages to get rid of all the blackthorn we had in the field - the suckers were popping up everywhere  >:D  And the thorns can actually go through a welly boot sole - they are not a very friendly bush as the thorns are quite difficult to see  :-\  I try not to have spikey things in the garden any more - there are plenty of other things you could have that are equally pretty and less aggressive  ;)

Okay thank you everyone for your comments.
I like it because its abundant with flower after the winter and looks very pretty.
We back onto a wood, so am not hugely worried about the invasiveness of it.  Agree about the thorns though, although we do have pyracantha in the garden.
Will give it some serious thought - thank you.

PS: In the meantime I would still like to try sloe gin  :005:
