Puppy bitch still swollen 6wks after 1st heat/season
« on: October 02, 2013, 05:08:35 PM »
Hi all,

Im worried about little cocker bitch. Ive not gone to vets yet but she is fully insured if I have to. Havent called them either as they always say to take her in at a charge. I may be worried over nothing but need to check.

She will be 1 year on 13th October She came into her first season on 19th August. It lasted the three weeks as per (what Im told and have researched) is the norm but now shes still swollen and just yesterday when I checked again her glands are quite hard.
Shes acting totally normal - happy, lively, eating, drinking, playing. Shes not nesting or burying anything, shes not grumpy or protective with anything. No males are running after her or sniffing around.

Is she ok or is she having a phantom pregnancy or what?

FYI - My dad has a lovely male cocker that we want to breed with her so we dont want to have her spayed. Also were a bit hippy and like to leave nature to take it course but obviously not if it means pain and suffering.

This is quite normal after a 'first' season, things should settle down soon, providing of course your dads dog didn't get to her before

You've got a year ahead of you now, to get all the health tests done and to check that the COI isn't too high (inbreeding) and that neither of them have endorsements on their registration papers.

Was she kept away from male dogs her entire season as she could be pregnant. Please be careful about breeding as it is not covered under insurance and if she needs a c section you have to pay up front and it can be  £1500. Both dogs should be health tested for prcd_PRA, FN, cPra and Glaucoma which costs hundreds as well, they should not be left to mate on their own and someone experienced needs to supervise them as they can do serious damage to each other :-\.

Thank you so much for the responses. I feel so much better now. Yes she was 110% kept away from any other dog. We done late night and early morning walks while she was in season.
Noted on all the breeding advice too, thanks.
