Hand Stripping - help needed please.
« on: January 14, 2007, 07:14:56 PM »
Can anyone recommend someone in the North to Mid-Lincolnshire area that could help me hand strip my little blue roan bitch?

I have been to see one lady, who was very helpful but as she has arthritis in her hands I didn't like to ask again.  There was another lady who I took "herself" to and she spent over an hour doing her head and feet, but she is right down the south of the county and it is almost a 2 hour journey.

Now the sides have grown!! ...and I can see what shouldn't be there, but I'm puzzled as to how to remove the fluffy bits at the end without cutting at it?  There must be a knack, but I have no idea what it is.

I have the grooming video and it all looks very easy on there, back to reality and a small yeti on the table in front of me and I dont know where to start. (Consequently I'm at the "omigoodness I don't know what to do with you so I've done nothing" stage).

It is very daunting, it took me the longest time to catch on. Part of the trick is to try not to look at the whole dog, or you'll be overwhelmed!

I assume you are talking about true hand plucking, not using a stripping knife?

You won't get it all done in one go--too hard on you and the dog! I would do mine while sitting on the sofa in the evening, a section at a time. I find the stuff over their hips and down the sides of their legs seems to come out the easiest, so that would be a good place to start to build your confidence and technique.

I pick up a tuft of hair in my left hand, just enough to fit between my thumb and forefinger, and pluck with my right.(or other way around if you're a lefty)  Then pick up the tuft next to it and so on. When you lft the hair that way, then the undercoat will naturally be what is exposed for plucking. Try to visualise a grid pattern on the coat and pluck each section of the grid. If it's fuzzy and "dead" looking just grab the hair, just like above, a little bit between thumb and forefinger and pluck--in the direction the hair is growing--at the fuzzy part

So hard to explain in writing...Hope this little bit helps!

Thanks Michelle, I'll give that a try (she is downstairs asleep on the sofa as I'm writing this - or at least I hope she is!).

I can see the lovely sleek dog underneath, but top looks like fluffy dreadlocks.

Will let you know how I get on.
