Blood in urine
« on: June 27, 2010, 12:20:09 AM »
I just arrived home after a day away. Elsie and Mali went to the kennels for 24 hours, my son collected them mid afternoon. Since they have come home, Mali has been peeing constantly so my son suspected a urine infection. In the past 20 minutes, she has peed in the house twice and three times outside. She is devestated that she's done it inside, she has been clean and dry since she was 3 months old. The ones that I cleaned up in the house had blood visible in them so she obviously has an infection.

Stupid question but what do I do? Apart from making sure she is drinking lots, is there anything I can do to help till I can get her to the vet?

Ginny,

I can't help I am afraid - only ever had boy dogs. But I am thinking of you, it must be so worrying.

Does your vet have someone on call at night whom you could ask? Maybe even pick up some meds from the surgery tonight? (Our vet does this - you can come to the surgery with your dog and not have to pay the hefty call out fee)

The only thing I can think of is a bit bicarbonate of soda in water as a temporary measure til you can see a vet  and get some anti b's

Thanks for your replies. Mali had a reasonable night and I took her to the emergency surgery just after 9 this morning. Her bladder is enflamed and very sore so the vet gave her a pain killer, an anti biotic as well as a B12 jab to prevent her colitis kicking in. She also has a course of anti biotics and pain killer to take this week.

Now that she has the medication, I think she will start to feel much better soon.

Mooching, you vet's out of hours service sounds great.

Poor Mali, hope she feels better soon, the worst we've had was cystitis with one of our girls, peeing small amounts often and with blood, but AB's and anti-inflammatory jab soon had her back on the road to recovery.

Mooching my vet is like yours, it's a vet hospital so a vet there 24/7 so if we need anything we can normally call them and meds are left at reception.

Ginny,
Glad you've been able to see someone - hope Mali starts to pick up really quickly.

Ours is only a small veterinary practice, but all the vets live locally, so I guess it's easy for them to pop to the surgery, and someone is always there 24/7 anyway with the animals who are needing to stay in.

Poor Mali, I'm glad she has some meds to make her feel better, and hope they kick in soon. Did the kennels not notice she was out of sorts?

she was only there 24 hours so they wouldn't really have had time to pick anything up really. I'd not noticed any problem with her before she went in on friday afternoon so it must have developed during saturday. My son collected them at 4pm so I doubt they will have had time to pick it up.

She seems a lot brighter and happier this afternoon so the pain killing drugs must be working.
