just because i`m nosy and love to learn are the blue roans the most popular because people like that colour the best or is it easier to breed that colour professionally or (is that temperament more sound?),i know a lot of hard work goe`s into deciding which dog and bitch to mate.and for example the chocolate cockers are quite rare, are`nt they.what % makes  up of what colours  if you know what i mean?

Oooo your going into colour genetics now a very complicated subject
Anyway I don't know too much as I rely on other people to keep me right    but Blue is a dominant colour. It also depends on what dog and bitch you mate and what gene's they carry. For example Buttons is a Liver Roan out of a Liver to Liver mating. If I mated her to a blue dog that only carried the blue gene I would only get Blue puppies no Livers as Liver is a recessive colour. It get's very complicated
Whilst we're on the subject? if I mated Butty to a dog that carried Blue & orange would I get Blue & orange puppies, meaning do both parents have to carry the Orange gene as it's a recessive colour to produce puppies?? And how would I know if she carries the orange gene?? Or am I talking out my bottom

Yes that is right, you would need two carriers of a recessive gene for them to produce any pups with the recessive colouring.  I think to find out if she does carry it would mean looking into her breeding and seeing what has been produced along the line and even then you probably wouldn't know for sure.  You often get a little surprise when you are expexting all a certain colour and a different one pops out. :)

You would get all black I think?
Though not many people breed solids to Parti's??
Jane will be able to tell you as she's a whizz on colour genetics  ;)

Gilly is right Sarah - if you mate your blue roan bitch to a black, then all the puppies will be black (with or without white "mismarkings") unless the black dog carries the particolour gene when some particolour puppies could result.

It's not usually done, when showing; however it is commonly seen in pet matings.
I know that we have parti's in our solid show line (about 5th generation) - from the stud dog side of my red dog. I remember the stud dog owner said it was frowned on at the time and no I don't think we would never do a solid to parti mating.

It's not "wrong" as such to mate a parti to a solid but I'd need a very good reason to do it ;) Parti x solid matings are often carried out in some countries (eg Scandinavia) but are banned in other countries (eg Germany). As Nikki says, it's not generally the "done" thing for show breeders in the UK to mix solids & partis but it does happen sometimes.
