Food & toileting
« on: August 10, 2015, 10:06:06 AM »
Morning! Looking for some advice on how to help Caillie's runny poos (sorry, I know not the best start to a Monday!). She has one good solid one in the mornings but for the rest of the day (2-3 others), they're either really soft or runny. When we got her from the breeder at 8 weeks, she was on the chicken and rice Vitalin dry puppy food, and although we thought it was more her age than the food causing it, we had done a bit of research and found that this brand isn't the greatest so decided to change her to the turkey James Wellbeloved dry puppy food. She seems fine in herself, tonnes of energy, lovely coat etc; she'll be 20 weeks on Wed and as we had her at the vet last week, we mentioned about the poos - he didn't seem too concerned and thought it would probably settle down when she moves on to adult food but this seems like a long time to wait! She's also sometimes a bit sick in the mornings but again been told this is probably just because she's got an empty tummy, and normally eats fine about 10 mins after.
I'm wondering if it makes a difference what 'meat' element is fed - i.e. she's had poultry-based so far, should we try the duck or lamb version, rather than another complete brand change? And if so, I assume this would need to be phased in the same way over a period of time? She also gets Waggs training treats as well as some of the JWB biscuits as treats, if that helps, but not loads of either.

James Well Beloved had exactly this effect on Archie as a puppy (all flavours). I read at the time that it's not uncommon with JWB. It just doesn't seem to suit all pups even though it is a good food. Archie was also very fussy so I ended up changing him to wet food (Wainwrights trays - literally the ONLY thing he would eat at the time) and he's been absolutely fine ever since.

After 15 months with JWB I changed to Wainwrights dry turkey kibble and can report that poohs are now firmer with less output  :D I mix with some steamed veg for dinner and just before bed give a bedtime biscuit to keep him going to morning. It would maybe help your pup to give him a biscuit before bed to stop the empty tummy and being sick first thing.

Just reading this whilst having lunch!

If it is any help we had a problem of inconsistent poo with Buster (2yr old wcs x cavalier). I would not have particularly bothered if it had not been that a few weeks after we got him from Many Tears he had an abscess on his anal gland which burst and so I want to be sure that he is sufficiently firm to empty the anal gland regularly so we don't have the same problem again.

[Not putting you off your sausages am I?...]

Anyway he is currently on a mix of Applaws kibbles with Canagan tinned meat. He is much more enthusiastic about this than just kibbles and we have consistently firm poo which we could not achieve on the kibbles alone.

All dogs seem to be different and what suits one doesn't do for another but for what it is worth that is how we sorted it out.

Incidentally having tried a teaspoon of the Canagan's meat I am bound to say it doesn't taste bad!  :005:

Lol!! And sorry about the lunchtime reading, might need to be more specific with my titles from now on to give fair warning ;)
It does sound like it'd be worth a change then as I've now read similar about JWB and I don't want her to be uncomfortable.
She does normally get a wee biscuit as she settles in to her crate for the night so had hoped that would tide her over but doesn't seem to be working as planned - although it is the JWB MiniJacks she gets so could be part of the problem if that food in general doesn't agree with her??
