Millies wolfheart for show type puppy?

Dylan came to me being fed on Royal Canin Mother and Puppy. He is almost ten weeks old. I wanted to switch him to Barking heads, but the order via Pets at home was messed up, so I had to buy some food and bought Wainwrights Grain free puppy. Been reading,loads on Allaboutdogfood til brain aches!

Millies wolfheart looks very good, but I wonder if it would be too rich for a show type dog who will not be working but live an ordinary active companion lifestyle? Also, why do most manufacturers make special food for pups and different food for adults, but people like Millies don't? This means you are feeding adult food to a pup.

He scratches his tummy a bit, which is why I went for grain free.

Some (if not most) manufacturers & vets feel that puppies need different food as they have different requirements, more protein for example or food for fast growing, high energy pups.

 You mention Royal Canin, and this is what Branston was fed on but his was Junior Medium as opposed to the 'Cocker Spaniel puppy' that they also sell (at inflated price!). At nearly a year old I am now in the process of changing him over to Forthglade wet food and he seems to be enjoying the meatier meals.

You will find with most of the wet puppy & adult foods that they do need quite a lot at one meal, mainly because there is a lot of water content as opposed to dry food which expands in their systems with what they drink from their water bowls.

Yep reading about dog foods has to be done in moderation - perhaps 2 or 3 comparisons at any one time is enough.

Dog foods branded and sold as being for working dogs are VAT free. Dog foods not described as being for working dogs have VAT added on. I know this because I used to be a VAT Inspector

It's a bit of a con really, and I think the only reason HMRC hasn't looked into it is that they have bigger fish to fry. But it's nice for us dog owners because a dog food producer can make a minimal change to a product, such as adding a bit extra Vitamin C, "hold it out for sale" (technical term) as being for working dogs and not charge VAT. Totally legal and very appealing to manufacturers and customers!

So don't worry about a so called working dog food being unsuitable for a pet, because it will almost certainly be almost identical to the same manufacturer's pet dog brands.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about looking for a puppy variety of any particular kibble either. I think it's more of a marketing ploy than anything else. Go for a good quality food as opposed to the likes of Bakers and Pedigree and find one that suits your puppy.

Thanks for replies. Just want to feed him the best. I didn't use kibble much before with my previous dogs, but now we have retired we go away a lot in our motorhome, so kibble will be the most convenient. Dylanis off to the vet to orrow for his second jab, so will have a discussion then.  He seems to like it better if I put some chicken gravy on it, but the past couple of days he has been sick twice, though this could be down to him picking up twigs and grass in the garden. He seems fine in himself however.

It,s been 15 years since I had a pup, I am out of pratice! I don't want to keep switching him about with different foods in case of tummy upsets. Sometimes there is just too much info and choice

Hi there, I feed Millies to my show girl. I've tried a few of their mixes and ellie stomps her feet when I'm weighing out her food too. Ellie is nearly 4 now and have fed it for over a year. We did feed Arden Grange puppy when she was a pup but then she refused to eat it and thats when i started looking at other foods. She also had a few ear infections so i wanted to try a grain free food too. We have fed another grain free food too that she also did well on too. There is lots of info on the all about dog food site and theres also lots of advice on col too :-)
