Charmer At Many Tears

My two are both rescue dogs (Dillon was my first rescue dog) and they are both so loving it's unbelievable.  All my previous cockers have been very loving, but these two absolutely adore me, just the way they look at me with so much love in their eyes melts my heart daily.  I swear they are grateful for being given a good home.

jan,it is thought millie is an ex breeder but my vet has said she is about 10 so she was used for a long time :: as you know paddy is very hyper at times but he is the best thing to have happened to millie.they are best friends and i know millie would not have settled so well if pads were not here.she really does have lots of fun and will follow paddy everywhere.paddy will protect millie if she gets wary of other dogs and they curl up together all the time they are wonderful to see i am truly proud of him.he is teaching her that she can be "naughty"and not get into to much trouble. you should think about a rescue. millie has taught paddy there are other dogs in this world and it doesn't evolve just around him she has been just as good for him as he has been for her.i thank god for both of them.

Yes she's definitely a Cocker not a cross or a Bichon & I think you're right - black & tans are probably losing their popularity with the puppy farmers as they realise that chocolate/liver is rapidly becoming the "must have" colour

That really annoys me   I know people often prefer one colour to another but they are dogs not a bl**dy accessory. Cockers have far more good qualities than the lovely colours they come in as well their health and temprement. I know - I am preaching to the converted

Yes he is probably a puppy farm pup   . His "breeder" address is South Wales so I suppose there is a chance Milly is his Mum too  . Billy is two now so don't know what age his mum would be. I don't suppose these farmers give the paperwork when they hand over the unwanted bitch to many tears so i suppose we'll never know. Billy is KC reg     so I do know the name of his mum.



I'd love to take on a rescue cocker, your post makes iit sound ssssooo tempting but to be honest I don't think Billy is the best role model at the moment

If Billy came from a puppy farm, there will be no way of knowing for sure who his mum is, I'm afraid puppy farmers fabricate the KC details, so it will be impossible to be certain.  

Nelly is supposed to be about 3years old and in a puppy farm situation, she would have been mated on her first season at about 6 months of age, so she could be Billy's mum but we'll never know the answer for certain.

The ex-breeding bitches have no paperwork & even if they did, it would probably be all lies anyway.

If you're tempted to take one on, you could contact Many Tears & see what they say.  My Dillon certainly isn't a good role model either, but they hit it off right from the start & now they even curl up on a chair together when I go out

I know what you mean about billys Kennel Club paperwork    - sad isn't it really. I really do wish KC would stop turning a blind eye to these people - but thats a whole new topic!!  

I have some training issues that need resolving with Billy - two main ones - recall and pulling on the lead. The lead pulling is the major one I need to rectify before I get a second dog as at the moment there is no way I can handle walking two dogs. Billy is very very strong and at 20kgs he takes some controlling at times. Its not a problem of the evenings or weekends when OH is here but first thing in a morning when I walk him on my own it would be a definate no, i just couldn't handle two of them.

Plus I have the fact that I would have to put them into kennels at times such as holidays, I just cant do this. My dad has Billy now, but he has said hes not prepared to look after two dogs. I have looked into house sitters but Billy pulling on the lead was a no goer with them   .

Your stories are sssoooo nice to read, I really admire you all, these poor rescue dogs must think they have died and gone to heaven  

I will have dog number two one day - but just not yet   .

If I feel sad about dogs like Charmer  I tend to send a parcel to many  tears with some chews in or toys ( a lot of the time buy them off ebay and get the seller to send them direct to many tears ). This tends to make me feel I have done something, not as good as giving one of them a home but a little something to cheer them up

 I wonder what these rescued dogs must think when they come into their new homes   it must be like all their christmases have come at once. Thank god for people who take these dogs into their homes and give them the life they truly truly deserve and lets not forget, thank god for Sylvia!!

I've done it a few times now and its much easier than sending a parcel that I have made up myself. You can get some good bargains on e bay, plus you don't have the hassle of having to parcel the goods up and then go the the post office.

Think last time I got around five toys for about £6 plus about £2 P&P.  

One thing also, Many tears website now have a "paypal" section where you can donate, its so quick and easy, fabulous idea

Regarding your problem with Billy pulling, have you tried using a Halti headcollar?  I've used them with my dogs for years.  Nelly is currently getting used to hers, she doesn't like it a bit, but I'm afraid needs must, she's a very big girl and  is way too strong for me to manage on a normal collar & lead.  Because of her past, she hasn't had a lot of experience of walking on a lead, so starting to train her from scratch is very difficult.  A Halti headcollar stops her from pulling without any cruelty to her.  I've just ordered some new ones from here  TRPD and they should be ready in the next week or so.  I'm hoping that she'll like her new one better than the old one which has been used for a few other dogs in the past.

mmhh kind of  :: . I took him to training classes a few months back and they recommended i get one and sold me one of theirs. Billy absolutely hated it, i tried and tried but he wasn't having any of it. Couldn't even get him to stand up with it on let alone get him out of the house. So i went back to the training class and had a word with the woman. She did some one to one for about 15 minutes with billy there and then, and she was really struggling too but was soo much better than i was. Billy hated it and at one point actually refused to move      he sat there  in the sit position and she had to practically drag him along the wooden floor  ::

In the end she gave me a new collar to try - not a choke - but similar- but not cruel as they don't actually "choke" the dog. This was no use either! I had to abandon training classes as my back was in agony.

Since that day i have never tried. Until MIL came round few weeks back and said "oohh its easy once you get the hang of it ( she had springers who used them)" but ooohhh no Billy was having none of it.

So now I know i have no choice but to have some one to one training with it. surely he will accept it one day?



He's also on a diet - although to be honest he's not fat just muscular so not sure how much weight he will actually loose - so I am hoping the decrease in weight may make him easier to handle

The one you tried for Billy - was it the right size?  If they don't fit properly, they can go in the dog's eyes & obstruct their vision as well as being uncomfortable.

I don't know if its the right size as the trainer chose and fitted it for me. i presume so because he actually got the first one off and so she swapped it for a different size.

I may have another go this week. Get some extra tasty treats for him as a distractor. I know its something I have to work on
