Cocker suddenly went lame and fell over !
« on: March 23, 2011, 01:06:07 AM »
My cocker Scoobz suddenly went lame tonight during his walk.  He held his front leg up limp like and when he went to put any weight on it he fell over. He did this three or four times. At the time it appeared that his leg was broke.  Indeed, he fell over onto his side so badly I thought he was deteriorating big time and whatever it was now beginning to spread as he was struggling to even get up. Went to pick him up to rush him to the vet but decided I would have a look at his leg.  Didn't see any problems and he didn't cry out when I touched his leg!.  Within less than 5 minutes he was walking normal and within 15 minutes was running around as if nothing happened.

Anybody got any ideas on what could have caused this.  During the walk I seen him "play" with a bee .

Many thanks

get him to the vets today, it could be a reaction to being stung but it could be something more serious, best get him checked over

I has a GSD once that got stung by a bee. She was out in the garden and i was watching her through the kitchen window. All of a sudden she looked drunk, trying to pick up her feet and couldn't walk!!

We nearly lost her and in future had to carry an injection in case it happened again.

It could of been the bee that stung Scoobz or might be another problem so best to get the vet to check over to make sure it wasn't something else. Let us know what the vet says plse

Could be cramp?

Heidi was incredibly lame and seemed to be going into shock just as if she'd broken something but after a trip to the vet who couldn't find anything to prove a break, we brought her home (xray booked for next day) and by evening she was getting back to normal.  She's had similar incidents since but none so severe.

She didn't fall over though so does sound more like a reaction to sting or similar  :-\

Sounds very like bee/wasp sting .
This can be a bit alarming because the dogs reaction can get worse if they get stung again . It's difficult to know what has happened unless you see it.
Also bear in mind nosey cockers ( other dogs are available) may find buzzing irresistable and HAVE to investigate  >:D
See your vet  ;)

Guess it must have been a bee or wasp as when I woke and went down to see him this morning he was as bright as a button and back to being his nosey self.

Should have been called Parker not Scoobz.

However, if it happens again it will be straight to the vets.

Also got myself some of that bee sting treatment as I have heard the second or subsequent times, as suggested above, can be worse than the first.

Thanks for all the advice.
