a quick bones question
« on: August 09, 2012, 06:34:42 PM »
I'm looking for ideas about other bones I can give the boys.
Harry loves chicken wings and lamb ribs and I want him to have a change.
Ben is not so keen on chicken wings but likes the lamb. Trouble is he usually swallows the lamb rib whole so dosn't really help his teeth. Also the lamb ribs tend to be mainly fat and not much meat.

I have done a search of old threads on here and seen that some of you give beef and pork ribs - are they just from a supermarket?
Also seen some people give chicken legs - do you just give 'drumsticks' that you can buy at a supermarket (sorry if thats a dumb question  :embarassed:)

Any ideas for other bones that I can tempt them with  :D

Rodaidh and Caoimhe get pork ribs, oxtail, pheasant carcasses, rabbit carcasses and chicken drumsticks as well as chicken wings and lamb breast/ribs - some people prefer not to feed weight-bearing bones but they've never had a problem with the drumsticks. Beef ribs are hard though so I don't feed them too often as they can wear down the teeth. I get the chicken, pork, oxtail and lamb from the supermarket, beef ribs from a local butcher and the pheasant and rabbit from going shooting with Rodaidh.

Weight bearing bones are only a problem on large animals like in cows, deer, pigs, etc.  You can feed any bone from smaller animals like birds or rabbits.

I give chicken wings, chicken thighs, chicken drumsicks, whole chicken legs, whole duck legs, rabbit halves, lamb ribs (not singular usually a strip of 3 with the thicker bit attached), beef or porks ribs in a strip, turkey necks and I think that's all of my usual choice.

I've not had a problem with any of these. I do however prefer lamb ribs to beef or pork.
