Hills Prescription ID feeding qtys??
« on: August 14, 2012, 02:24:27 PM »
Weve been advised by the vet to put Rolo on Hills prescription ID to try and settle his tummy and sort out his runny poo's.
I ordered some online and its just arrived.
Im a bit confused though as it says dogs weighing 10kg should have between 145-210g a day but at the moment Rolo is on 300g a day! Is this right? is anyone else feeding this to their dogs?
Caz :)

Maybe because he is a puppy the vet prescribed a larger portion per day?

no experience of it i'm afraid

Sorry, not sure im understanding you. Do you mean he has 300g of his normal food so you think the hills doesn't seem enough, or has the vet suggested 300g of the Hills which sounds like a lot? I just checked the ingredients online and it seems very cereal based with quite a few additives and fillers. I don't feed dry so am not in the best position to comment but I remember when I was trying to find a kibble that Archie could eat that the more meat based, higher quality ones ones tended to have a lower suggested daily amount. Maybe that has something to do with it. Hopefully someone with more experience will be along to help. Really hope it sorts Rolo's tum out for you.

When Cupar had an infection (diawhotsit and passing blood) the vet prescribed Hills Prescription Diet for 1 week , sorry cant remember what amount we fed him, but it cetainly settled his tum and diawhotsit cleared up Id go by what is recommended on the packet for his weight. Have you been advised by the vet that its a short term treatment ?

Hi. Do you mean Rolo is on 300g so you are expecting to feed the Same quantity of Hills.  All foods are very different including density of food so if the guide says 145-210g per day then that is what I would feed.  Just one thing.... Check whether it is based on current weight or predicted adult weight.  Some prescription diets can be fed to pups as I am sure this is suitable but the guide may be based on adult weight.  If confused might be worth ringing the helpline, there should be a number on pack as they can advise on their food.

Hi,

Merlin was prescribed Hills ID by the vet as a puppy for ongoing runny poo issues, and we were also a little confused by the feeding guidelines as they seemed more geared towards adult dogs. Lots of searching on the internet swiftly followed and I found the following on the hills US website:
http://www.hillspet.com/products/pd-canine-id-canine-gastrointestinal-health-dry.html - go to the feeding guide tab

Their UK website doesn't contain the same feeding guidelines table but does say the following:
http://www.hillspet.co.uk/en-gb/en-gb/products/pd-canine-prescription-diet-id-dry.html
"GROWING PUPPIES
Based on a puppy's age and weight, feed the same number of large cans, or grams of dry food, as shown for Puppy Healthy Development in the Daily Feeding Amounts for puppies plus an additional third (33%) for i/d Canine canned or an additional 10% for i/dTM Canine dry."

Though it doesn't say anywhere that I could find what the feeding guidelines for puppy healthy development are.

We followed the guidelines from the US site as a guide and Merlin did see an improvement in his diarrhea and was putting on weight, finally resolving his tummy issues was unfortunately rather more drawn out process.

Hope this helps,

Claire

Can I ask what food he is on atm? I hope you dont mind me saying but 300g sounds a lot.

When Willow had colitis as a pup we, on the vets advise we put Willow on RC sensitivity control. This seemed to settle her tum really well. The vet advised if it suited Willow to keep her on it, however i am aware that most vets gets commission from RC and Hills. When I looked at the ingredients i wasnt impressed most certainly when considering the cost of the kibble. However it sorted her tum so that was the main thing. A good few months down the line I did a bit of research and looked at threads on here and decided to get a sample from barking heads, we gave her 'Fusspot' potato and salmon, good ingredients and a lot cheaper.  :D Weve never looked back since changing her to Barking heads in terms of her tummy.

Good luck, having a pup with a bad tummy is so worrying.  Hope he is feeling better real soon.

Thanks Claire - website was really helpful!  :D
He has been on fish4puppies since he came from the breeder. Weve been going by the guidelines and hes been having 300g a day but i think the qtys decrease after 20 weeks which he is now.
Ive started slowly introducing the new food today so will see how we get on. If I can help it, i dont want him to stay on this food forever as its so expensive but if its the only thing that sorts out his tum then that is what we will do.
Thanks maddy, I will look into barking heads when we change next time!
