what is 'sable?'
« on: August 15, 2012, 11:54:01 PM »
When people talk about the colour of their dog, and refer to it as 'sable', what does this actually mean? Sorry if it is a daft question.

It's the colour  ;)

If you google sable cocker spaniels, you can find some pics  ;)

Lol I know it had something to do with the colour. I googled it last night and lots of different colours came up, that's what confused me. My laptop must of been playing up or something, I've just googled it on my phone and just one colour has come up.

Just do a forum search, Lottie (button is in blue tool bar towards top of page), - lots of threads come up like this one:

Sable is actually a pattern rather than a colour and you will see lots of variations, both solid and particoloured. It's considered an "undesirable" pattern under the UK Breed Standard but puppies can still be registered as sable by the KC.

Hi Jane, if Sable is an undesirable pattern under UK breed standard, I wonder why Freya's dad (also Sable) won a junior championship at Crufts?  Sable cockers have black tips on gold and are very pretty :shades:.

Because the Breed Standard has been changed - I believe one sable has won a class at Crufts in the past (not a championship) but that was before the standard was changed. Sables can in theory still be shown in the UK but judges have to bear in mind what the standard now says.

Hi,  I've just gone through the papers for freya and you are right it was not a championship at crufts.  I don't know why I thought it was - I remember finding him (or at least I thought I had)as winning a junior show and there was a photo of him, but all I can find now is mention of him coming second at a scottish champ show , so I must be getting confused in my old age. :buttkick:

Still show standard aside my Freya is gorgeous and has the longest eyelashes ever - I love her to bits  :luv:- standard or not and everyone I meet coos all over her.
