the formula mix and amounts seem perfect...youre doing a great job, stick with it, it may take another day or so for the weaker pups to pick up. Keep putting them on the best teats (sometimes its best to get a stronger pup to suckle and draw the milk down on the best teats for a minute then switch it with a weaker pup whilst the milk is flowing freely)......

how is coda now???....is she laying for them?? ......does she seem well and have plenty of milk???

with respect to clefts.....if you get the chance to handle the pups, get a small torch, open their mouths, and have a good feel around....milk from the nose whilst feeding is a good indicator.

stick with it, youre doing great, its very tough raising pups...xxxxx

You're 100% right Sharon it isn't easy  but I went into it with my eyes open and lots of support from both Codas breeder and the stud breeder, a few friends I've made through COL and along with the marvellous advice from all  COL members I am determined to get both Coda and her little family through all this.

Decided to put my mind at rest and take mum and the 3 poorly pups back to the vet today as I was worried I wasn't getting it right .  He has thoroughly examined the 3 little ones and said that I have probably saved their lives by intervening so quickly and that I should continue to feed all 3, 2 hourly at least for the next 24 hours and continue also letting them have 1st feed from Coda for 5 mins before the bigger ones latch on. Says its still touch and go with the smallest girl  :'(   but at least I'm giving her a fighting chance and that the 2 others look as though they're through the woods and if they are latching on ok by later this evening and look as though they are getting a good feed then just top them up 4 times a day for another few days.

He had another good look at their palates but still thinks they are ok as they are latching on and suckling and there isn't any milk coming down their noses but he says he'd like to see them again in 4/5 days when they will be a little bigger and he can better check them.

Coda had her calcium levels checked too and everything is fine so all in all I feel a lot better although I do realise its early days. And she is laying for them now thanks Lucy - at least 90% of the time so it makes it easier for the pups and lets her get a rest during the feeding too which I think she's suddenly realising  :005:

Thanks again everyone for all your great advice and just for your support in general.  There's nothing better at that low point in the wee early hours of the morning than just knowing there will be someone on COL with some answer to your questions  :005:

Oh beleive me Lucy just knowing you are all out there is a godsend  ;)

It has reassured me a bit seeing the vet but obviously I know we've got a long way to go.

Everything crossed  ;)

Hope the wee one's make it, you can only try your best.

Lots of ups & downs but give it a couple of weeks and you'll look back at how much they have grown and start to enjoy them.

I don't want to disagree with your vet but your best option would be to let the bigger greedier pups start to feed then swap the smaller ones over, the bigger ones will bring the milk down for the smaller ones so easier for them to feed.

Just thought I'd give you all a brief update on Codas litter a week on  ;)

All 8 pups are now feeding well with mum and gaining weight (rapidly in some cases  :005:)  but most importantly is that little tootsie has come back up to her birth weight and slightly over!  I am over the moon and although I know she is not out of the woods yet I am at last feeling confident that she is on her way  :shades:

Can I thank everyone again for all their advice and support  :luv: :luv:  There were quite a few early morning hours over the last few days when the advice on COL was all that kept me sane  :005:

Great news and well done.... Anyone that reckons having a litter is easy needs knocking on the head...

Keep up the good work and lots of cuddles to coda xxx

How right you are!
I had done loads of research and planned well in advance, I've had marvelous mentors who've been there day and night, and still it has been hard!  :shades:  Well worth it every time I look at them all sleeping in their little bundle or quietly suckling  :luv: :luv:  but blooming hard! :013:
Don't regret it one bit though ! Coda is a star and it has made us even closer I think and I am so looking forward to the pups being more awake and playful  ;)
