How many weeks between handstrippings
« on: January 13, 2004, 09:39:40 AM »
:)

Inide was handstripped about 10 weeks ago, the groomer said to bring her every 12 weeks, but within about 3 weeks of being done, she was a fluffy monster again :)   Obvisouley she still has her puppy coat coming through as she has only been stripped once.  I was wondering is it better to leave her the full 12 weeks inbetween strips or get her done when I feel she is going too fluffy :?   Will it make a difference to her adult coat?

Any advise?

As a groomer, I like to see 8 weeks at the most between appointments although there are always a few "clients" who leave it longer than this for one reason or another. If your groomer says 12 weeks, then I guess you'll have to stick with this but it seems a long time to me...hair can grow an awful lot in 12 weeks :)

Hi Emma, some coats grow quicker than others, maybe your groomer thought she would go 12 weeks before she needed a trim.

If you think she looks untidy then then book her in. It won't affect her adult coat by having her trimmed more regulary. I think it's better not to leave too long between trims with youngsters as they can get bored and restless.

:D Thanks for that ladies 8)

I will get her booked in, because she is looking rather untidy and more like fozzie bear than a cocker at the minute    I have had a little little go at doing at myself, but am so frightened of hurting her :?   Maybe I will wait till she is quite used to getting it done.

Mrs bojangles how did you go about finding a groomer . Think its about time bella got a proper cut just wondering if it was a cocker groomer or just a normal one ?

Hi

I was lucky really as they own a pet shop and grooming parlour, they breed cockers and field spaniels and show them, or used to :?   When Indie was little during her socialisation I took her there and they made a huge fuss and then I asked them about handstrip etc :)

You could try looking in the yellow pages, there might not be a specific cocker one, but there are some that do handstrip and other breeds get this done too    Just ask about too, if you see someone with a cocker, ask where they get it groomed etc!

I get Candy and Georgia stripped once a month.  I don't know if this is too often or not but they look great!   :D  The last of Georgia's puppy coat has more or less come out and Candy's coats really shines.  In between sessions I just try and keep on top of the mats which seem to appear from nowhere  :x  I'm just really lucky to have someone who lives nearby and knows what she's doing!

That's good Loraine - there's no reason not to have Cockers trimmed regularly & I'm sure your groomer is happy that she has 2 well-groomed girls coming to her :) I do have a battle getting some people to bring their dogs to me on a regular enough basis - it's no fun being confronted with a dirty, matted floor mop

Lady, as Emma says, it's best to go by personal recommendation with groomers. So many "yellow pages" groomers advertise handstripping but are not actually willing to do this on Cockers so if you do ring round the high street groomers, make sure they are willing to trim Bella as you want her done.

I'm even more spoilt than that Jane - not only is she teaching me and explaining what she's doing so that I can learn, I don't even have to leave the house, she comes to me!!  :)
