Hi Everyone!
« on: October 26, 2005, 06:07:20 PM »
Hi to everyone on 'COL',

my name's Catherine and I'm lucky enough to have a new arrival of an 8 week old little baby boy chocolate roan cocker spaniel called 'Sonny' who arrived home on Saturday!

He is gorgeous, and was settling in nicely until Monday afternoon when he started with sickness and dioreah, and was off his food, have kept him on the same food as the breeder had been giving him (Royal Cannin).

He has been really quiet and lethargic, not wanting to play, just really sleepy.
He perked up a bit yesterday, and started eating just a little.  He was still really quiet and sleepy, this morning.

Took him to the vets this afternoon, because I was really worried, and they have kept him in, and put him on a drip to rehydrate him.

Hopefully he will be home tomorrow evening, the vet said they would like to keep an eye on him for 24 hours.

I had rang the vet when Sonny first started with this, but I was advised that it was probably due to being away from his mum and brothers and sisters, and being in a new environment.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this with their new pup?

Will let you know how he is!

And try and post some pics......

Thanks,  Catherine.x

Poor little thing
I have not had this problem with a puppy but I have with an older dog. Once she was rehydrated she was fine. It might just be a tummy bug

HI Catherine & Welcome to COL :)
When Domino my cocker was 17 weeks he developed sickness & diarrhoea like Sonny. He was taken in at the vets & also put on a drip overnight & various blood tests were done but nothing conclusive was found. We thought it was probably just gastro-enteritis but after a couple of days he was back to normal. :)
I hope Sonny will soon be feeling better. Do let us know how he gets on!!

My parents retriever suffered with this and had to be put on a drip as he was dehydrated, he was fine in a day or so.

I hope he's OK poor little thing. :(

Hi Welcome to COL :D
I am newbie too, Wallace is 22 weeks and had diarrhoea a week after we got him home.
They go downhill quickly but recover quickly too!  Wallace had a course of antibiotics and had stool samples sent off but nothing conclusive.  We were also given a prescription diet (vet said white fish or chicken and rice would be ok too). He soon weaned back to his normal puppy food and never looked back.
Hope Sonny is well soon

Welcome and sorry to hear your puppy is poorly. :(

It is very common for puppies to be off their food and also get a poorly tummy when they go to their new homes. A change of water often doesn't help plus the excitement/anxiety off everything changing etc.

As long as the vet rules out anything sinister he should be fine. Did you get him from a reputable breeder? If so I would give them a call as they would want to know their puppy was poorly and should be able to give you some reassuring advice too. ;)

Hope the little lad is better soon.

Its frightning the speed at which they can go downhill but they also bounce back just as quick :)
