Some of our newer members have wisely been asking about grass seeds and what they look like. Listed below are a few sites that show you what to look out for and the dangers they can impose. >:(

A timely reminder. Thanks Michele.

They can get into those ears in seconds. I'm sure it is good advice to check the fur for seeds regularly but last year Buddy's seed was right in his ear before we knew it and we had to cut our walk short and head to the vet.

Another good idea is to invest in a snood, then the ears are completely protected.
The one I have is a cotton 'tube' elasticated at both ends - dead simple.  ;)

This site HERE is an American one, but it shows you how to measure up, so you could even have a go at making your own.

It pays to read up on these things!

Read about this just the other day, Bonnie became slightly lame last night, took her to the vet today and low and behold she had a grass seed. Not like the ones on the pictures, about 6cm long, slightly fatter on one end and really hard like a needle. The vet said that if I had waited another day the grass seed would probably have gone right up and she would have needed an op.

She's had a painkiller, is on antibiotics, had her paw bathed in salt water and I've just cut masses of fur off her paws.

So thank you Michele I think you promoted me to act more zealously.

Bonnie sends licks.

Glad you got Bonnie sorted before it became really nasty for her.  :-*
Grass seeds are evil little blighters and if posting this has helped just one dog then it's worth it. :003:

Grass seeds can get anywhere but with cockers having the longer ears I think the odds are raised somewhat.

Halle had one puncture her nostril last summer, just by sniffing around. I was SO lucky it didn't go up her nose.

Phoebe started limping a bit yesterday evening. Checked between her toes today and the front left paw was weeping. Only a gentle squeeze and a lot of puss came out. Salt water bath at the mo and to the vets first thing in the morning.

I agreed with a grooming client this morning - they are REALLY bad this year. >:(
Presumably because April was so sunny and then May so wet they seem to be early too this year.

Good luck with Phoebe at the vets in the morning.

Bonnie update

The grass seed that was removed has either left behind some fibres or there's more in Bon's paw - tomorrow she has to have an op.

Sunday she will be 1!

So virgin grass seed people BEWARE

Phoebe is not looking so good either. I have bathed her foot in salt water and dried it. A load more puss/ fluid came out and there was quite a squelching sound. There would appear to be quite a big abscess in between her toes, with a clearly visible hole. The liquid is fairly clear though with a little blood, it does not smell either. More salt baths and a sock on. Cant see any foreign body though.
