Eating Leaves!
« on: October 06, 2004, 01:39:57 PM »
Hi, wondered if anyone could help with this    As it has been very windy for the last couple of days  there are lots and lots of leaves in our back garden (we are surrounded  by trees). Alfie has been eating some of them although i have been trying to stop him, its not easy and its impossible to pick up the leaves <_< ! This morning he has had diarrhoea, not badly but sort of half formed and half very loose (if you know what i mean!). He is still the same as usual in himself, mad as a hatter, nutty as a fruit cake   ! so was wondering could it be the leaves? I was thinking of not feeding him tonight  his normal meal and maybe just giving him some natural bio yogurt. Any ideas from anyone   ?

Hi Louie

Our Toffee is very good at eating all the wrong things, you will need to be very carefull with your dog. Toffee now wears a muzzle to stop her eating items and vegetation from the garden or anywhere else. She has been so poorly.
Also remember some plants are poison.
If you think you dog has an upset stomach, this is the advice from our vet every time we have attended with this type of problem.

"Starve her for 24 hours making sure she has plenty of fluids then resume feeding on bland food boiled chicken and rice a little at a time every hour or so".

It is difficult to advise as I am not a vet or cannot see your dog. I just wanted to make sure you understand how little dogs can harm themselves, and they never learn!! We have spent a lot of money at the vets over a period of six months just because Toffee can't resist picking things up and eating them.

Usually if your dog is very ill there will be other symptoms, moaning, shaking soreness in their belly and sometimes their mood or behaviour changes. If in doubt get advice from someone who can see your dog.

Thanks for that! Alfie is back to normal today  :) . He wasn,t fed last night his normal food, but i did give him a couple of tablespoons of bio yogurt. He generally is quite a fussy dog so i have never had a problem with him eating the wrong things. He,s going to the vets for his booster tomorrow so i will mention it when we are there and he has,nt been bothering with the leaves today, i have been watching him .
