Ozzy - Working Cocker ? Mayhew, Nw10
« on: April 23, 2005, 11:15:49 AM »
Just wondered if there was anyone on here looking for a possible working cocker - me and a few others think this little guy is a working cocker, but the Mayhew think he is a collie x cocker.  Perhaps they have little experience of working cockers though.
Anyway here is the link -

see Ozzy.

Aww I hope he finds a new home soon. He certainly looks like a working cocker but its hard to tell. After all I have a cat that is 100% pure moggy but everyone swears at  me that she's siamese!

I'd love a working cocker but I'm afraid one Ozzy is enough for me!!!

I often walk my dogs with Sue from the Mayhew - she's pretty convinced Ozzy is mostly a Collie although she says he does have spanielish ears. Her first dog was a show Cocker ( a Lochranza bitch  :)  ), so she does have quite a bit of knowledge of the breed, although I'm not sure if this extends to working lines.

Ozzy's first owner was in no position to bring up a pup - she's disabled, couldn't cope and so confined him to the bathroom. :( Unfortunately this means he arrived at the Mayhew without  any socialisation at all and not even toilet trained - he's not good with other dogs, can't be homed with children and requires a very experienced owner to provide the training he requires. All very sad really. :(

Still doesn't explain why she got a dog in the first place.

Sorry if you think I'm being hard, but disability doesn't excuse anyone from thinking things through.

I saw a Many Tears pup recently who was in a similar situation - the first owner "never went" outside (maybe agrophobic (sp)?) - someone had bought the pup to to keep them company - a well meaning, but totally misguided gesture which is diffiult to refuse if you are the recipient and dependant on others

Ozzy looks lovely; there does seem to be a lot of collie in him........I am sure he will make someone the most wonderful, if bouncy,  companion

What a lovely looking fellow. I hope he finds a forever home soon. So sad he's had a rotten start.  :(  he deserves a really good time now.

Thats the thing, knowledge of show lines does not mean you know what working cockers look like -I could show you dozens of pics of working cockers that look just like Ozzy.... I've shown his pic to several people who own working cockers and we all think he looks like one - but I guess none of us have seen him in real life ....  :)
What a shame his start in life was so awful, poor little lad.
Whatever he is, I hope he gets the appropriate home soon, or his life isn't going to improve much.

I don't think you can tell what Ozzy is from that photo. It's hard to see what his general shape & build is as he's lying down though he seems to have very fine bone for a Cocker (sorry can't bring myself to use the word "working cocker", it sounds like a swear word ) Hope he finds a new home soon, whatever breed or mix he is.

From what I understand Ozzy is  a similar height to Misty (she's just under 15") but he's a lot slimmer and longer - so he could well be a Working Cocker. Maybe I should go to the Mayhew and have a look. :D

There's a beautiful Cocker that I see in the park on a regular basis and I'm convinced he's half Working Cocker at the very least - he has the shorter, high set ears, is very slim and VERY active. I keep telling his owner this but he doesn't seem the slightest bit interested - as far as he's concerned he's got a great little dog and that's all that matters. I, on the other hand would want to know for sure - does that make me a bit of an anorak ? :D

Must admit I'm not keen on the working cocker word either - it reminds me of those annoying little Ewok creatures in Star Wars. :D

Hattie is very slim and very long - working cockers are all different shapes and sizes though !  go on Colin, go have a look and take some more photos of Ozzy for us !
working cocker was my invention sorry - along with several other silly terms for working strain dogs - wollie, weardie !!!    it just seemed easier than saying working cocker all the time !!!
