Sammy's right eye......
« on: May 27, 2004, 08:52:18 AM »
....looks rather runnier than usual and the white looks a bit red....is this how they go when they have been out for a long walk or am i just worrying for nothing :?:  I seem to be looking at him for anything and everything since that prog. the other night :!:  He loves the 'new world' that he has discovered since being able to go out, so when my husband me or my daughter come back from a long walk in our local playing field,  I check him for things in his fur or his paws etc. He's my new baby, so am  I being a bit over protective, I really don't want to go to the vets again after the first 4 weeks of having him was spent there till he was given the all clear from his Kennel cough, it doesn't seem to bother him, but when he looks at you I notice it looks rather teary. My husband says he wishes that Sammy would smile and not look so sad all of the time, even tho his tail wags all the time....

Hi Subeeloo,

I am so glad you're enjoying your new little boy he sounds so sweet, as regards his runny eye, is it clear discharge or yellow?

Sometimes my girls get watery eyes for a couple of hours or so, so I would'nt be to concerned yet, but if at the end of the day it's worse it might be an idea to phone your vet and ask his advice.

You do worry about every little thing when you get a new puppy almost as much as when you have a real baby!

Watery eyes can be a sign of a tear duct problem or it could be an allergic reaction this time of year (to grass, pollen etc) It's worth checking out if you're worried although probably isn't anything serious. Watch out you don't over-exercise Sammy though - he's only a baby & shouldn't really be going on long walks just yet

Indie gets this too. Often in summery weather, when there is a lot of pollen around, I always assumed it was that.

He did hve anunrelated eye problem that was surgically fixed, but even before that he got red eyes sometimes.

We have just been to the vets for the same thing.  He doesn't have a discharge or anything and doesn't seem to bother him - but, decided to get him checked - his right eye waters the most - we have the tear staining as evidence.  He does have loose eye rims though - so I did expect watery eyes but still thought it best to check there were no underlying problems

We have been referred to the Opthalmic vet clinic in Edinburgh - no major concerns but his one eye has a tiny eyelash that could be aggravating the problem.  Need to see a specialist now to decide whether to leave well alone or to remove the eyelash and check his tear ducts at the same time.  They also want to look at his eye under magnification incase of tiny eyelashes not seen by the naked eye.

I haven't been on col for ages so hadn't seen this thread - just a coincidence that the first time I look on here - it is the same query that I had and after returning from the vet!

We had been keeping "an eye" on Brogan for a while - not distressed with it, no infection etc.  I actually thought I may be silly getting it checked but then if in doubt?

When we go to Edinburgh I want to stress to the consultant that if the problem is just cosmetic then I want to leave everything well alone.  The vet I see is wonderful - she didn't seem overly bothered by him - but wanted it checked further just incase the eyelashes are adding to the problem - the dye didn't show any signs of scratches on the eye.  So, we will now see what the expert says - she did add that it was a pretty minor problem and to not go off worrying.

I will be surprised if the tear duct is causing the problem as the dye she used did appear at his nostrils - which shows that the eyes are draining - it was however slower to appear on his right side - the worse side.

Jessie also has runny eyes...very runny eyes...but as the discharge is clear our vet has said its nothing to worry about and is a 'spaniel' thing. As an orange roan she also has the tear stains to go with the runny eyes which are proving very hard to get rid of!!

For the tear staining we were advised to use - contact lense solution that cleans/rinses/disinfects and lubricates.  Being safe as a lubricant means no stinging if some accidently gets in the eye.  We use Renu Multi Purpose made by Bausch & Lomb.  Apparently it breaks down the protein.  It does work - though not overnight - more like weeks!!

I clean Brogans eyes but don't worry about the staining too much - Brogan is Brogan stains an' all - a bit extra to love!!
