I had forgotten to check this post - THANKS EVERYONE for welcoming words!
Michele, "Phaedra" is an English/international spelling (the most common Swedish would probably be "Fedra", which I sometimes use to prevent an "uh?" when I write my dogs name in messages to other Swedes/Scandinavians
). Phaedra is a person in Greek mythology, the daughter of King Minos and younger sister of Ariadne. Racine made a classic drama about her.
Just by coincidence three of our four first dogs got names from literature/mythology, so after that we decided to give all future dogs such names:
We started up with DAPHNE the komondor (greek/roman mythology), my first cocker's name was FREDMAN (a character in the popular works by Swedish 18th century poet Carl Michael Bellman). We got a male, 6 months old borzoi whose name was Casper. I did not think this was a suitable name for a proud, stylish sighthound, so I changed it to CASPIAN after the prince/king in C.S. Lewis's books about Narnia and the Phaedra came. With her, I had a hard time deciding between "Phaedra" and "Fides", the godess of loyalty in Roman mythology, which I think is a brilliant name for a cocker (=next dog?). Our young borzoi bitch is named LISHKA after a character in a modern opera.
Our second dog was a borzoi called CINDRA, and that seems to be nothing but a series of dog shampoo...well, you can't have everything!
