Oscar Has A Limp
« on: August 06, 2004, 09:04:32 AM »
Oscar has been limping a bit so we have taken him to vets for them to have a look at him.   The have said that it look like he has a cartilage problem with front right elbow (sorry I don’t know the doggy name for it) they have given him some painkillers and some puppy growth tablets!! He does not seem bothered by it, he just limps for about 5 to 10 min but after that he is fine? Even when he is limping he will still run around, you can’t stop him.

Has anybody had this problem before? And does anybody know what I can do to help things along. The vets have told us to cut him down to 2 walks a day and not to play fetch with him as when he stops suddenly it could cause a problem. Even at dog classes he started to limp by the end of the training.

Any help will be great.

Awwww poor Oscar :( !
Non of our lot (apart from Harv) have dun this.
Every now and again Harvey does act the goat and tends to lift either a front or back leg. When he first began doing this I thought he may of hurt his pad or got something caught in it...after inspecting there was nothing  :?. We took him to the vets and he was stumped :?  . I have a feeling Harvey is just an attention sheeker (as last time he had painkillers and a hot water boat wrapped in a towel, around his leg)   .
He is just after a special treatment of TLC   .
We usually find that he acts like this every now and again but it only lasts about a day - he is just a very clever crafty dog   .
Hope Oscar will be ok!

Has your vet suggested anything else. If in doubt I always would seek further help if this is going to be a long term problem—vets are like GPs and so need to refer people on as they're not always specialists in a certain field.

I could be wrong but i feel that the vets just see pound signs as she said something about Oscar having insurance. I would like information from people who are more concerned out Oscar and not pound notes

I think its not always that as my vet referred Wilf quite quickly to an oncologist last year which sometimes isn't always possible if a person doesn't have any insurance. In those cases where people don't have insurance or immediate funds vets may then try out different things themselves before referring. The initial consult at Cambridge vet school was £164 (before VAT) of which my vet got none of that (and my final bill was about £2000 which was made a lot easier because I was insured).

Your vet may be thinking on the lines of referring you to a specialist vet in this area or to a vet school. Or the fact that your dog may need ongoing treatment for the rest of their life and if you have insurance then hopefully that will all be covered.

Oh yes we have Insurance, i think people must be mad if they don't. we have already had to make a claim for Oscar when he had problems with his ears. I just want what is best for Oscar and to get him better soon, but if you looked at him most of the time you would say that the was nothing wrong with him. He is a star and just loves to be around people.

Hi,

If its any help at all, I booked Aimee into the vets last Monday as she had an ear infection. When I got home to take her, I noticed Wesley was limping very badly on his right foot. I couldn't see anything in the pad or between his toes, so I took him to the vets with me. Vet checked all his bones and ligaments and couldn't find anything wrong.

She had a closer look at the foot and asked if i had seen him chewing it. I said no he hadn't and it had only started today. Turned out that under all the fur on the top of his foot, he had a nasty sore just between his toes that had what looks to have been weeping for some time. She gave him an anitinflammatory injection and a course of antibiotics and now he seems to be ok.

Now I am not saying that this might be what is wrong with your little one, but it certainly surprised me, so it might be worth taking a look. Took the vet about 5 minutes to find it too.

If vets know that you have insurance, I am sure they milk it for all its worth. Its a good job my vet is nice and honest!

Our Joris have has this as a puppy too. The orthopedic explained to us, that a puppy need lime for his bones, but there is one place where the lime must go away and that is where the veins go in the bone. When that is not going quick enough away then they get growpains.

We were advised to dosage the activity's and indeed painkillers. After about 2 month he have not have any pain, good luck

Thanks for all the help. We have not been walking Oscar a lot and we have not been playing fetch, but we did take him to Ashurst Beacon on Sunday. We did not walk him there, we just lay on the grass with a picnic and let he do what he wanted to do. Most of the time he spent lying next to us and did not seem to be limping as bad when we got home. So it looks like with cutting down on his walks and the tablets he is having is working.  :D

Just like a slipping (or subluxing) patella you can also get a slipping elbow but that occurs more frequently in larger breeds. Slipping pattellas are more common in smaller breeds

Oscar has been to the vets today; nothing has changed with his limping.  :(  I have to take him back tomorrow for x-rays but they say they are going to have to give him a general as they want to x-ray all his legs. He is still sulking from Saturday when we left him for 3 hrs getting his hair cut,    don’t know how he is going to be after this as he can not have anything to eat or drink after 8 tonight. Will let you all know what the results are when we get them back.
