Bad Leg
« on: September 17, 2004, 08:26:44 PM »
Our dog Sweep suddenly started lifting his left hind leg off the floor and limping on Tuesday. We took him to the vet who examined him and said he had cut one of his pads but that the cut was superficial as it had not bled. She gave him anti biotic injection and a pain killer and said not to take him on long walks just short ones on grass. He perked up a bit the next day but today he is hopping along on three legs and off his food a bit. He seems to be resting a lot so maybe it will heal up ok. We can't see anything on the pad so are getting worried it might be something wrong with his leg. Any advice?

Have you tried to bathe his paw with a saline solution?  The reason I ask is that Vegas sliced his pad and it took ages to heal up. He did limp for quite a bit - even a small bit of gravel stuck in the cut was enough to make it painful. The vet advised me to bathe his paw after every walk. He was also given antibiotics and pain relief as his was a bad one.  If Sweep hasn't perked up tomorrow, maybe give your vet a call to see what they think.

Poor Sweep :o
The antibiotic should have kicked in by now and he should be recovering so I would definitely take him back to the vet.  Try not to worry too much it could be something simple and it does need further investigation.

Well we have been back to the vet with Sweep and saw a different vet who said he has had a cut to one of his pads but also detected a problem with his knee. He has given him anti inflammatory drugs and wants us to see how he is in a week. If he is still limping then they may do an x ray under a general  anasthetic. He has been off his food but tonight ate his meal when we mixed a little bit of cheese in it. He is not like his normal self and seems a bit depressed and subdued. The vet has said he can still have short walks so maybe he will buck up a bit as we had not been taking him as he was walking on three legs all the time. I am really worried he is my baby. I just hope it clears up soon.
