Be Careful !
« on: June 09, 2005, 04:58:00 PM »
Hi all - just a quick warning to be aware that those awful grass seeds are about  :(

Took G & D out this morning and Georgie came back with the tell tale signs of hanging her head and shaking it.   Took her straight to the vet and sure enough one of those awful seeds had gone into her ear. :( Fortunately, because Georgie was a really good girl  the vet was able to get it out without having to give her anaesthetic. She thinks its pierced her eardrum so she is on drops, poor love, but she is ok.

Both of them had seeds last year so I made them head bands and we had no more problems......just did'nt realise they had started already so had'nt started to put them on yet....will do from now on    The vet said it was her first one of the season!

;) Take care, Sue Georgie and Daisy xxxxxx

 We've just got Pebbles, our Blue Roan. He's just over 8 weeks old. He is our first cocker and we were aware that we had to be careful with his ears but we didn't know specifically about grass seeds. Could you please tell us a little bit more

Many thanks   :)

Poor Georgie - I hope it hasn't done any serious damage to her eardrum.  They are horrible and not much you can do to avoid them, just keep up the regular grooming and check between pads and ears for any that are lodged there.  Morgan had to have an anaesthetic last year to have a grass seed removed from his eyeball

Hi Sue
Many thanks for this. I've taken note and bookmarked it for future reference

There's so many things to remember and watch out for.

Still - they're so worth it!! We're all absolutely smitten with Pebbles :P  :P

I hope Georgie feels better soon, we have started using the snoods/ear covers again as it's that time of year again.

Ow poor Georgie - what a good girl though for letting the vet remove it !

Hattie had one in between two toes a few weeks ago - fortunately homeopathic Silica pushed it out - and with constant salty water / Hibiscrub bathing for a few days it cleared up without a vets visit.  (the Silica also pushed out a blackthorn that had gone into her tail)

They are definitely bad news for droopy-eared dogs !!

Last year, Bramble had a couple of episodes of hanging his head and scratching etc - we looked down the 'black hole of Calcutta' but couldn't see anything, so called in at our Vet's (after phoning of course) and the nurse took the offending object out with a pair of special tweezers and a 'scope ...
I think they charged less than £10 which was well worth it because if we had left it any longer, it may have needed antibiotics etc.
