Daisy's Nasty Streak
« on: October 16, 2005, 09:59:51 PM »
Hi All,

I'm a bit miffed this evening. Daisy seems to have shown a nasty side that we didn't know she had.  :(

OH took her to the park this afternoon. She was playing with two dogs, both bigger than her but they were friendly. The owner was sitting nearby on a bench watching them. Julian was throwing a stick for Daisy and she was retrieving. Anyway, as she lay down to start chewing her stick, the labrador went over to try and get the stick off her - and she snapped and bit his face.

Julian was mortified, he said she even had fur in her mouth from his cheek.  :o

The other owner was very nice, nicer than I would have been if it had been the other way around. I know she hasn't been well lately but I am worried now as we're due to get our new pup in 5 weeks.

Hmmmmmm.   <_<

Sorry to hear this Toni - I can understand why you are concerned with a new pup due to come home soon  :(

No real suggestions other than trying to socialise Daisy as much as possible with other dogs to see whether this was a one off because shes poorly; or whether she is showing this behaviour on a more frequent basis    The pup is likely to have "puppy license" with Daisy for the first few weeks anyway, which might help reassure you a bit  <_<

((hugs)) for you; its not nice when you discover they have a slightly less endearing side  :(

Dont know if this is any help but Alfie will also gaurd against another dog trying to get his stick or ball when out in the park. Hes fine with a human trying to take it, just wont tolerate another dog trying. Saying that if I throw a ball and another dog reaches it first hes not bothered in the slightest and just waits till he can get there first next time

I am sure Daisy will put the pup in her place but from what I have found out with mixing my two pups with other dogs is that an older dog will 99.9% of the time not hurt a pup, so I wouldn't worry.

Yesterday, my mums golden retriever who is MASSIVE   had a go at Herbie (13 weeks old).  Herbie couldn't stop crying  :( , even about a minute after he was attacked he kept yelping out.  I had to cuddle him for ages.  I checked him over and he was fine, not a mark on him (just a bit of slobber), in fact jasper left him for about 10 mins then came over to lick his face.

Jasper could have really hurt Herbs if he wanted to, he was just putting him in his place.  Like my mum said - sometimes, I tell my children off and they cry - I guess this is what Jasper did to Herbie.

Sounds like Daisy was telling the other dog "go away it's my stick", and quite rightly too :)  I wouldn't let this incident spoil your excitment of getting your new pup :)

Firstly, stop throwing sticks pleeeeeeeease its really really dangerous - you can do so much damage to your dog in an instant.  Splinters in throats, mouths - sticks going down throats the list is long...
Secondly was there blood drawn, or did she just pull the fur ?
I would recommend that you don't give her anything to "guard" around other dogs - for example, if Hattie has a dummy that we are retrieving out on a walk, if I see another dog coming I put it away so that she can't "guard" it.

if someone came up to you that you had never met before and tried to pinch a prized possesion i am sure you would have a go :) so daisy was just doing the same.maybe the other dog didn't say please.at least she's not a wimp and stands up for herself.don't worry about it.daisy sounds wonderful you are very lucky.good luck with your new puppy daisy will love her  :D

If you knew how many times I told my OH this. I am actually going to print off this thread and show him. I always take a toy or ball to the park but unfortunately he's not that organised!
