It's probably the manufacturers recommendations that he is following.  Personally I would take her out after the first injections because she will miss a very valuable few weeks socialising if you don't...

When I did Max last year it was 2 weeks.

I'm taking Barney this afternoon for his first jab, he's 8 weeks old.  I'll let you know later today when his next jabs will be done.
Sam is mum to - Sapphi (working black Lab 5 1/2 yrs), Max (Golden Retriever 4 yrs) Morgan (American Cocker 2 1/2yrs) and mum in spirit to Barney (English Cocker 3 1/2 yrs now living in Scotland)

They may have changed vacc. We now use on that recommends the second jag three weeks after the first, rather than 2 weeks.

I found that it was entirely random, frankly.  One of the three vets at our practice said four weeks.  The second said three weeks. The third (you've guessed it) said two weeks.  The nurses were all over the place too.  I asked if all the vets used their own "preferred" vaccines, but no, they are all (IIRC) Novartis ones so I went with two weeks as Pads and we were going potty and carrying him everywhere to get on with socialising him was getting more and more tiring.  I'd ring the vets and ask why four weeks and what happens if he goes out earlier.

i'm with penel on taking her out after 2 weeks...we had puppy classes at our vets at 10 weeks so it wasn't an issue between jabs to socialise jarv. socialisation should be fairly easy for you with ellie -  ellie is surrounded by lots of people in a rowdy family with teenage daughters (the pups are attended to by a gorgeous 13 year old 'junior' vet who attends to their every needs and spends every available minute she has with them).  they are housed very separately but in the same area as 2 working collies, and jess (jarv's beautiful mum) and the other working cockers...which is next to the house..so they hear barking and noise a lot and nothing much phases them!

just a tip lyn when you pick her up...make sure she's had her worming earlier in the day or week!...when we picked jarv up, he was due a worming so whilst i was holding him fi wormed him...he spat it right back over my face...still I've not scooted along the floor on my bum since.... :005: :005: :005:

thanks for the tip helen.i think they will be ready a week tomorrow.i want to go and get her then but,jim is working away next week and he wants me to wait until he is home so he can come too :005:he is trying to act all cool about her coming here but i have caught him going through the puppy box with a smile on his face.luckily(i think)paddy is over the ear infection and is back to his bouncy self.when the fa cup game was on tv on saturday he was joining in the fun with the rest of us.he got very excited when we scored and then won.of course the house erupted in shouts of joy and he sat barking and his tail going mad.a sure sign he is better.
i am glad ellie is being raised in a mad house.she will def fit in here then :005:
we will be carrying her when we take paddy for his walks and we will make sure she is well socialised it just seems a long time between jabs.i am dreading taking pads for his booster in august.he is such a cry baby and screams the place down.i think i will let jim have that job this year.
helen have you noticed if jarvis'coat is starting to grow wildly?paddy's coat is sprouting all over the place.he is starting to get a skirt >:(his chest is starting to resemble millies its so long.at the rate it's growing he will need a haircut.his head is lovely and smooth but the legs and belly are growing long and thick.i thought he had his adult coat and it would stay quite short.
i will let you know what day i am picking ellie up.i am going to call fi today.

I had Lunas first jab at eight weeks and she is due for her second jab at ten weeks .I did ask the vet if two weeks apart was ok .He said its perfectly safe to have two weeks apart unless your dog has become poorly on the first jab,bad reaction to the first jab etc.
All i can think of are all vets have different recommendations on jabs ,I dont no.

It would be worth finding out which Manufacturers Vaccination the vets use - most companies publish the Licensed Schedules of their products on their websites, so you can see if the four week delay is because of the product  :-\

The scientific reason behind is it this.  A puppy has maternal antibodies, inherited from their mum - these protect them from diseases when they are tiny pups.... maternal antibodies wane between 8 weeks and 16 weeks.  After 16 weeks they usually have no maternal antibodies left (according to research and testing etc.)  So when you vaccinate a puppy at 8 wks old, you are usually "challenging" the maternal antibodies, so for a puppy that still has maternal antibodies, the first vaccination actually may do nothing at all.  That is why they repeat it however many weeks later, as by then, they are hoping all the maternal antibodies will have gone, and that the 2nd vaccination will actually be successful in it's mission !  I hope I've explained it ok !
Out of interest the homeopathic vet I see with Lola vaccinates his puppies once at 16 wks old, then never again.
