Woof Woof Woof Woof Woof Woof!

Hi everybody. I am very new to this forum, and also new to cocker spaniel ownership  :) My parents have always had cockers, but I haven't actually been owned by one myself so I need to learn! Merlin is my newbie cocker, and he is one year old. I have had him since last week that's all, it's a long story but in a nutshell he belonged to a friend who couldn't give him the time he needed. Anyway, you may have guessed he barks... quite a lot. For attention, at my other two dogs, if he's not with you.... has anybody else had any barking/whimpering problems and if so, how have you dealt with it other that stuffing earplugs in your lugholes!!??!!

Hi Shantel welcome to COL and the crazy world of cockers. Saw your post on dogpages earlier. Sorry I can't help but I know some on here have similar problems.

My only solution to 'mad' Max barking is to tell him ' quiet ' - to which he turns deaf <_<
and to put him in the kitchen for a time-out, each and every time he does it.
Only for a few minutes and then he is let back in and stays in if he stays quiet - or back he goes.

Not much i can do about it if i am out but hope he's not too noisy - no-one has complained yet :D

I tell a lie   its not the only solution - depending on how 'hyper' he is when he is barking i can often distract his barking by making him sit and asking for a paw and then he gets a cuddle.

Prefer to try the second method first

I have this problem with Holly.  She barks at people, cats, leaves, birds, paper blowing past, doors slamming, the wind, the doorbell, the car starting..... Did I mention that she barks a lot?  Don't know the solution but if you have finished with your earplugs could I borrow them???

:P  Bailey used to do this alot in the garden, however he seems to have grown out of it. I just used to tell him to shut up and behave, it didn't work at first as cockers are very selective over what they want to hear, but i think he has the message now :P  :P . I think you just need to persivere(hope ive spelt it right) with telling him to be quiet. Hope you have some luck. :)

Hamish (9 months) was very barky up until a week ago. We now bring him in to the house everey time he does it, and he's really calmed down a lot. We don't bother when he's out, or during the day really, but at bedtime and early mornings we enforce it.

Alfie barks at everything, especially other dogs and hedgehogs for some reason

He seems to be slowly growing out of it but it can make days out a bit difficult especially as dh is away for 6 months and we have a 1 and a 2 year old too    Wouldn't be without any of them though  :D
