Short Hair

Hi everybody

I was wondering if any of your cocker spaniels had short hair when you first got them :? as Rusty is 14 weeks old and his hair is still very short not curly at all :? Any cockers we meet like tonite, we met a owner with his 13 week old cocker girl and she was all fluffy and absolutely gorgous  and I was wondering if Rusty is not going to be fluffy at all or do boy dogs hair grow differently? I was actually beginning to wonder if he was a full bred cocker, until yesterday we got his papers through with his five generations, and he definately comes from good stock a lot of champions in it. :D I would appreciate it if anybody can give me any information on this............ :)  :)  :)

Hi, I've no idea what the answer to this is, but I would guess that they're all different, as Danny's feathers didn't come until quite a few months after we got him (at 8 weeks) but at 11 weeks, Ollie already has some feathering on his legs and tail and had longer and fluffier hair than all of his littermates.  Hope this helps. :)
Love Becky, Danny and Ollie!

Brogan had a very flat and short coat when he was younger.  He never really got fluffy as such - his back remained flat and his feathers just got longer and longer.  I was amazed  when I first used a coat king on him - how much puppy coat came out - don't know where he was hiding it - although he did look very slim afterwards  .  We never seemed to go through that woolly mammoth stage - certainly not like I was expecting.  His coat even now is not profuse - although he has a lot for an orange roan.

Bailey on the other hand is 14 weeks today and is already turning into a fluff ball!!  His coat stands out in all different directions and is just one mass of hair.  He will look adorable in a few months!!  There is no doubt that his coat will be much thicker than Brogans and harder to groom  Think it quite considerate that Brogan broke me in gently to grooming - ready for the hair monster!

Useful tool for stripping out the undercoat:

The coat king is a grooming tool that gently pulls out puppy coat and dead hair.  It is like a handstripping device that you pull through the coat in the direction of hair growth.  It does cut the coat to some extent though so is not usually used for show dogs.  A 26 blade coat king is usually used on a cocker spaniel.  It is a great tool for people who want to avoid a clipped cocker but don't want the long job of handstripping.

There are a couple of previous threads on coatkings but sorry I don't know how to paste the shortcuts   Hopefully the search will bring them up for you.   Unless someone else kindly comes along and helps me out!

Edited to say:  sorry Penny you beat me to it :D

Well, I think it is You who have a puppy with a correct coat quality :D . And it will be easy to maintain. After all these are not american cockers we have. In my opinion less is more.

Coat density is also related to colour, blacks tend to have more profuse feathering, but I think it all depends on the individual dog.

My blue roan is very feathered although at 7 months he was still quite short - he had been handstripped once already at this age.

Jovi is Liver, White & Tan, 6 mths old and hardly has any feathering at this stage.. Makes him look really weird. http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/photo/Puppies/Cnv00025
