The 3rd Or 4th Day Is Good For Docking?
« on: November 15, 2004, 03:52:51 AM »
Hello all,

the book of the bitch says that we should dock  tails in 3 or 4 days. think we dock three of them tonight. and  wait until the little one get to the weight of 300g.

would it be alright if I docked his tail on the 5th or 6th day of birth?
And how long should I leave the tail? Is the length of tail same as American cocker spaniel's? I know a very reputable american cocker spaniel breeder near my house. maybe I should ask her this time.

Here goes our beautiful new born babies.. :D

I placed the little one where the mother's milk sufficient. Let post more pics at the gallery.

they have to be docked by 5 days. It's illegal after that.

I think that Chris and Soo Jin are South Korea, so I imagine the laws are different to ours!

It's not - the law is silent on when docking should be carried out but normal practice for most UK vets is between 2-5 days.

Chris, if you have not docked puppies before (assuming breeders can dock in Korea), then it would be best to have someone experienced with you like your American Cocker friend. Yes tails should be about the same length as in American Cockers I would say.

We had ours docked at three days by the vet. I think you are right to leave the weaker pup untill day 4.

Oh - and get someone who has docked before to help you - Don't try do do it on your own first time round - it takes some skill!

(assuming it is legal for you to do so!)

Sorry everyone, I was always told it was illegal to dock after 5 days old, and that after that it was to be classed as an amputation. Can't remember where the information came from.

My vet won't dock after day 4, when we used to dock I always had it done on day 3 by a qualified vet, as we were lucky enough to find one willing to do it.

Our vet always docks on day three also, but after a cesarean my Tina had 5 years ago the vet left the pups until they were five days. He said that due to the stress of the cesarean it would be best.

Thank you all.

We docked our babies  a few hours ago except the little one. also dewclaws too.
an experienced breeder helped us. how lucky she lives near our house.

The little one sucks his mom's teat quite well and gains weight everyday. He will be docked on 5th day.
