« on: July 05, 2004, 08:54:19 PM »
8)  Apologies for you more experienced ones here (and apologies if this in the wrong forum!).. however when buying a puppy that is no more than eight weeks old should they have had injections?

If so which ones and if not what injections should puppies have these days? :?:  8)

Thanking you all

A puppy shouldn't have any injections at 8 weeks old, usually they are still under the cover of mum's antibodies at that age, plus no reputable breeder would let a puppy go before 8 weeks    Usually injections take place at 12 and 16 weeks, although this can vary depending on the vet so could be 10 and 14 weeks. I know the injections cover Parvo, not exactly sure what else, Gill or Shona maybe able to help as thye both work at vet's

Leptospirosis and canine distemper vaccines are two others that are given - not sure if there are others?!?    :)

My vet gives the jabs at 10 and 12 weeks, though I never got Cooper till he was 11 weeks so he never started his course till then - there must be a minimum of two weeks between jabs. :)

Hi

Jarvis got his just over 8 weeks when we took him to the vet for a health check. He then got his second jab at 12. It's seems didferent vets do it differently.

Mine were done at 8 and 11 weeks.

Don't forget that at this time while your vet will say don't take your pup out what he/she really means don't put them down on the ground for walkies or come into contact with dogs that aren't vaccinated. I know to some I probably sound like a stuck record on this one but socializing is more than important. Find a way of carrying your pup out and about so they can experience as much as possible in the safety of your arms. They need to know what traffic noise is all about, people on high streets, people enjoying themselves at fetes, fairs, etc., etc.

Lottie was also vaccinated at 8 weeks and 11 weeks.

But until she was able to walk around we took her out and about a lot.
This is an excellent time of year to get out with a pup in your arms, there are plenty of people and events on to visit.

The more they can experience when they are little, the more confident and relaxed they are later on.

I can throw the numbers 8 and 10 into the bag!!  We took our advice from our local vet - after all, he will be providing Woody's medical care from now on so we thought it best to do what he recommended.  There's lot of information on the internet about the different vaccinations and what is covered by them.  Your vet should give you a leaflet explaining what your pup has been vaccinated against - we just "googled" all the medical terms.

Both Evie and Molly had their jabs at 8 and 10 weeks, I wonder why some vets leave a further 2 weeks?
