He doesn't need water at night. If you don't give him water at night he is faster housebrooken  :P

Maybe you have the put the water a little bit higher. So that he can drink but not go with his paw in it

actully i was in halfords today and looked at the pet section , i saw a water bowl that would be fab for cockers with there long ears as the middle part where they put there mouth is narrow , I think it would be harder to get his paw in not only that he cant see the water  as its narrow he might get bored . if you see him doing that tell him sharp no ! hopefuly he will look at you if he carrys on tell him again . if he still carrys on take him by his colla and make him sit . then take the water bowl from the floor .
If he carrys this on after all that teach him how to ask for a drink take the bowl away once hes learnt he has to ask for his water just leave the bowl on the floor as he will learn the value of what you have given him :)as he will have to wait for you to come give it to him its not ready on the floor to drink straight away.  if he drinks it empty and is still thirsty he will soon let you know
Make sure if you go out to always leave water though.
I did this with mine I had the problem that i would end up with a bowl at my feet and water on the kitchen floor , its fixted the problem but i still end up with the bowl in the living room or where ever I am when its empty or she will ask :) as long as the floors not flooded its ok

I find heavy ceramic water bowls are best for puppies (Pet Planet do a good ceramic spaniel bowl) - those plastic travel bowls with the narrow opening have never been very successful with our pups

If your puppy is being fed on a dry complete food, then water should be freely available & I would not withdraw it totally at night, though you can certainly reduce the amount you leave down at night time.

yes he is on dry food and does drink quite a bit but will check it`s half full for bedtimes, i may get a bowl that clips onto the side of the crate, does anyone use one?

yes we use that. Our Joeis (now 2 and a half year old) does still eat in his crate  :?  We have tried an other spot but he wants it in his crate. It works well  :P
