Title: Dog tags
Post by: CrunchyMand on March 26, 2009, 10:08:02 AM
What info do you put on your dogs tag? I want to order one but don't know if I should put my surname on or the dogs name or both, or do I put "I.D chipped" What do you think?

I don't put the dogs name on, as I was told that someone might see this and call the dog by name!  I have my surname on, street name, postcode, and telephone number, maybe mobile is best, as long as you don't change your mobile too often  I also put on there that dog is microchipped, and also if it has been spaded or nuted. and for the blind one, I have 'I am blind'

The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including post code) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag.  Telephone number is optional (but advisable)

If your dog causes an accident (road etc) or be in a public place you can face a fine of up to £5000 if your dog does not wear an identifcation tag without the correct information.

I personally just have mobile and home number on mine regardless of legislation, which is my own choice and not advocating it for everyone ;)

On one side Surname, address including post code, and on the other side, both telephone numbers and I am Microchipped. I was a bit cross when I went to get Rufus's new matching blue tag for his Christmas present ( a blue Rogz collar and lead kept clean and smart for agility) because the shop was told by the manufacturer  of the engraving machine to advise 3 lines, not 4 as I have always had, because they say the writing gets too small. The puppy foundation class tutor told us what to put. Apparently a trend had emerged of just putting house number, post code and  "I am microchipped". However, some wardens and the police do not have immediate access to a scanner, and interpret the relevant provisions as requiring the address. She suggested both telephone numbers, because the chances are the dog is found while you are still out. I am pleased that Rufus, although very poor at recall when younger, was never lost. My friend however had to wait over night to trace her dog because there was no access to a scanner  that day and no answer on the home phone while she was out. The person who found her dog called the warden, who had no space. This meant her dog got transferred and she had to pay the fee on recovery

Many training classes (especially the KC Good Citizen Awards) also check the tags for this information and won't "pass" the dog until the tag complies with this; so even if you don't want your dog to wear a tag with this info on when you are out, it may be necessary to have one that you can put on for training classes!  ;)

I have heard that some dog wardens are increasingly seeing dog-tag compliance as an easy way to meet their targets for prosecutions/fines for the year; it is a lot easier to fine someone who has a dog with them which has a tag that isn't legal than it is to track down the owner of a stray dog with no tag at all  ::)

my current tags are these - and I can really recommend the deep engraved ones, no problem reading them almost after a year.

on front with paw I have "I'm microchipped"

on back I have my surname, mobile(s) (mine & OH), street name & postcode.

all fits perfectly.

it says surname, phone number, spayed-ID chip, house number street name and postcode.

In Cardiff I know they're not ;) mainly as they were the ones who said it was fine for me to do this plus with only 2 wardens for a city the size of Cardiff from 9 till 4 when they spend their time picking strays up or are in court over dangerous dogs or should be fining people over dog mess I beleive this is way down on their list of priorities.

To be fair, anyone living within about 3 miles of me knows Jarvis' name, it doesn't have to be on the tag, and he ignores anyone calling him except me or his granny anyway   So i don't think it's that much of a risk. ;)

Having recently found a dog with a tag :D but without an address ::) and getting no answer on the phone, i would always recommend having address on there. Mine have my name, number, and home address. Planning to get new ones with "chipped and neutered" on as well as t'other info. :D

Is a good point - the local Dog Warden gave a talk at our dog class and pointed out, that even having house no. and postcode doesn't help them (or whoever finds your dog) as if they pick up a dog at night, they don't have access to equipment/computers to give the full address, so just adds to the length of time it will take to get your dog back.

That’s what Brodie has! (the pink one ;)).  I love that website, got her a gorgeous collar from there as well.

I have ‘I’m chipped and neutered’ on the front, with my name, address and home phone number on the back.  There is a mobile number on the answering machine so I didn’t bother putting that on…

I don’t think it would make a difference if Brodie’s name was on it or not, she’d answer to anything ::)

the reason i only put phone number and chipped on was because the tag is only little , i just thought that if they couldnt reach me on the phone then if they scanned him it would come up with his address

i will however , when he gets a bigger tag have everything on it  :D

Gari has a Keep Safe tag, it has their phone number and his personal ID no. Apparently, this complies with current legislation that all dogs should have owners details on the tag, not necessarily displayed on the tag though. If he got lost, anyone finding him can phone the number, quote his ID and they will phone me and give me the finder's number to call and be reunited with him. :D

I found a dog last year who had this tag, her owner was reunited with her within 10 minutes. Funnily enough, I knew the dog as I had rehomed her to the owner in the rescue centre - small world! ;)

I'd also have to have two tags as well if I did + Ruby has been returned twice to me by concerned passersby who found her in a street while I was looking for her on the park where I'd last seen her - am also thinking of putting my vets number on as well

Alway worth having your address on the tag.  Misha once lost her tag while we were out on a walk.  Next day I had an envelope through the door with missing tag and a little note to say they had found it while walking their dogs.

Ruby has one related to her insurance - More Than. It has an ID number on it and a number to call if she is found. They then have all of our details including the vets, and if needed, know that she is insured if she needs any urgent treatment so that there is no delay. She doesn't have any of our contact numbers or address visable, but More Than would contact us to arrange to be reunited if she ever did stray/go missing and was found.

Not sure now if she should have one with our address and contact numbers on now that I have read this thread.

I would't put my address on it for security reasons. A. Because if anyone found Mali they would know that I was out and B. Because as someone has already said, anyone seeing it would know where to come if they wanted to steal her.

you put neutered on your dog tags because it makes them far less valuable to dog thieves  - a good looking entire bitch would spell pound signs to a thief as you can breed from them....time and time again  :-\  An entire male is more valuable as he can stud pups but it's usually evident if he is entire - a bitch not so as you would have to check for a spaying scar, so even if your bitch is neutered or not I think it's useful to have 'neutered'  on a tag  ;)

Reassuringly, although I have heard this regularly given as a reason for not putting a (legally required) address on a dog-tag, I have never actually heard of a case when a break-in has actually happened in this way  ;)

and often you can't tell - even another vet can't always tell as some scars are so tiny

You sometimes get would-be thieves becoming friendly with you (lets face it we always like it when our dogs get attention and while I would never stop this or even think about it at the time its always a possibility) and they may even look closer at dog tags in the process.

When you live on your own (especially as a woman) you do either fear more re personal security or make sure you try to cover all bases ;) so its not just about statistics - fear of the fear is a very relevant fact in behaviour with regard to crime in all aspects of life.

and no matter what arguments people put forward to me tough I'm not changing it

I had have someone look at Indie's tag when she was a puppy, the man said he was looking at it cos it was nice but he had flipped it over to the reverse where the details are - very strange and don't know if he was genuinely looking at her tag or not, bit weird for a bloke to do, can understand a woman looking at her pretty tag and being interested in it but its not really a man thing.

Also had a situation where a weirdo on a bench called her over and then grabbed hold off by her ear and wouldn't let go, shouted to him get his %*&$&*%  hands off my dog and he laughed but did let go, that has made me wary of walking her in places where there is no-one else around.

No-one gets the chance now as she doesn't approach strangers and its quite hand-shy with people she doesn't know and if they try and stroke her she backs off - not surprising really.     I now just have house number, post code and mobile telephone number - however my mobile expires on Tuesday so just realised I have to replace all my tags with new details.

Forgot to say, I have house number, post code and mobile telephone number on mine.

Why not ask to port your number instead of changing it, it can take a few days but saves you money of replacing tags  :D

Existing number is a contract phone which is up on the 31st March 2009 and have cancelled, going to buy a pay as go you cheap phone as don't want to add another monthly bill to our bills if I don't manage to find a job so I don't think I'll be able to use the old number by buying a pay as you go.

I have 'I am neutered and microchipped' on one side and my mobile telephone number on the reverse. There is no need for an address, which can be obtained if she is scanned and I always have my mobile with me if I am out.

This is what Billy has.

On the other side it has my surname, address & phone number.

I think the next one I get I may have it without my address & just have more telephone numbers instead.

so even if your bitch is neutered or not I think it's useful to have 'neutered'  on a tag  ;)

Yes, Wherry's not and her tag says she is. Just as a possiblle deterrent, can't hurt  ;)

You can still ask to port the number there are no restrictions. Hubby has been contract, pay as you go, back to contract and still kept the number various networks to orange, t mobile 02 etc
