Title: Gari's not "right", but I'm not sure what's wrong.UPDATED.
Post by: Rats and Dogs on June 08, 2009, 08:35:51 PM
For the last couple of days Gari has been a bit strange, I can't exactly put my finger on it. He has been coughing a fair bit on and off over the last few weeks, and now he doesn't want to eat his breakfast and is very whiney. I think he wants to eat other food rather than his renal diet, but I can't give him anything else. He is eating in the evening, but is constantly hanging around me asking for something, but what, I don't know. :-\

I'm going to take him along to the vet tomorrow to have his heart and lungs checked because of the cough, and he's also due a blood test to check how his kidneys are doing. At the moment he is pacing up and down and whining, then he'll lie down for a little while, then do it again. He still wants to go out and spends a lot of time barking at the workmen and wagging his tail, plus I'm still getting lots of cuddles and kisses from him, but something is niggling me.

He has been out of his routine the last couple of months with me being in and out of hospital and off work, so maybe that's what's upsetting him. I was really quite unwell yesterday and he spent the day in bed with me, so maybe he's woried that I'm going to go away again. But, I'm more concerned that it's him who is ill. :'(

Does it sound like anything or am I just being over-protective?

Go with your instincts - there might be nothing wrong with him but better safe than sorry.  I do know that Brodie can be a little 'off' on the days that I have bad flare-ups so hopefully it's nothing more than that. I am incredibly paranoid when it comes to Brodie so I know how you're feeling :-*.  I love Gari to bits and love looking at his funny photos so I hope he's back to normal soon :luv: :luv:

No advice, just hugs to both of you. You're having such a tough time. I hope Gari's ok at the vet tomorrow (and that your appointment comes through but maybe that's just hoping for too much....)

You have to go on your gut instinct sometimes, and you are doing the right thing by taking Gari to the vets.

I would say though animals are so receptive to us,and maybe as you said he is out of sorts because you are and seeing as you had a bad day yesterday maybe he is unsettled.

I wish you both well  :-*

I always think that if your instinct is telling you that something is wrong, then it usually is.  I used to do this with Chloe.  You get so attuned to your baby that all it takes is a few deviations from their usual routine or behaviour and you know something is not right.  I hope whatever it is that the vet can sort it out lickety split :luv:

As others have said.....go with your instincts....you know your baby the best.
'Coughing' is a real tender point for us at the mo. (Purdeys Problem!) and is best to get it checked out (the vet won't say your wasting his time.......they get paid whatever  ;) ) Maybe he's unsettled because you've been unwell but at least you'll know for sure! {{hugs}} to you & Gari.....hope you get it sorted  :luv:

Gut instincts are what I always go with.  Better to get Gari checked out and be given the all clear IMO.
Let us know how he gets on at the vets  ;)

It's partly after reading your post and the one about Jewel that made me decide to take him. I work at the vets, but am off ill just now. When I phoned them today they told me to stop worrying, but best to bring him in for a check up anyway. He lost his voice when I was in hospital, and I thought it was because he's been howling, but obviously it could be to do with whatever is causing the cough.

I'll find out tomorrow anyway, and hopefully can get rid of that horrible knot of fear that's in my stomach just now. :-\

I took Gari to the vets today and the good news is that his heart and chest are fine, and the cough is just a very bad cough, apparently his throat sounded rough and his glands are up. The whining and grumbling are because he has a sore stomach, his abdomen is very tender to touch and he cried when the vet pressed it. :'(

He has been given a steroid injection, antibiotics for the cough and anti-spasmodic tablets for his tummy pain. He is getting a reprieve from his boring renal diet and can have scrambled egg, and chicken and rice until he feels better. I made him some scrambled egg earlier, and pretended I was eating it (I actually was eating it, but it hurts my stomach!) so that he would want it - he wolfed it down and spat out the tablets! ::)

So, it looks like he has come out in sympathy with me! :005:

Oh, and BTW, I finally got a hospital appointment for the 23rd June. And, when I was at the GP's yesterday, she had received a hospital report that said I had an enlarged bile duct and a sludgey gallbladder, and had passed stones! But, still nobody will take it out! :o She also said to go straight to A&E with the next big flare up, which I will, if I can get out of bed.

So, I am thankful that Gari doesn't seem too bad, but of course, being the terrible worrier that I am, I'm now panicking the stomach pain could be something serious. ::) We are both taking it easy today and cuddling up on the sofa. :luv:

So glad it is nothing serious for Gari.  Hopefully the medication will get him right as rain in no time.  Hope you get that gall bladder out sooner rather than later too!

Glad to hear his heart and chest are fine, hopefully the tablets will work and he’ll soon be back to normal :luv: (although I’m sure he’ll hope the scrambled eggs keep on coming ). I find primula cheese is great for sneaking them tablets.
Great news on finally getting an appointment, although I can’t believe they are just going to leave you until you get really bad >:(
Enjoy your cuddles on the sofa and I hope you both feel better soon :luv:

Glad its nothing too serious - hope the meds have him feeling better in no time. Brook used to spit his out too, no matter how well I thought I had disguised them. Then Vegas would sneak in at the back of him and eat them quicker than I could blink  :lol2:

Aww Fiona, what a time of it you're having - really glad Gari's feeling a bit better though and hope all goes well for your appointment. My neighbour had your problem and went through hell and back, in and out of hospital but nothing was actually done for her.  Finally, her husband whisked her off to Belford Hospital in Fort William (after she'd had spells in our local hospital) and demanded that something was done....she had the operation within 24 hours and is now as bright as a button and super healthy! I hope you won't have to take such drastic action, but its worth bearing in mind  ;)

I might need to borrow her husband to shout for me! ;)

Gari seems to be a bit better now, he was delighted with his chicken and rice dinner, although his tummy is still sore when I touch it, but at least he wants to eat now. He's still coughing a fair bit, but hopefully he'll get a better sleep tonight, and me too as I stayed up with him until 5am! :o Hopefully, he'll soon be back to normal. :luv: He thanks everyone for their good wishes. :D

This was him earlier when he wasn't feeling very well at all. :'(
