:D Hi everyone. So glad I found this website. Invaluable for the owner of a new cocker pup!! Roxi is a nine (almost 10) week old black (with white flash on chest) Working cocker spaniel pup and she is absolutely adorable. A complete live wire... does their energy EVER run out????? I have had her 1 week and she is trained to sit (which she does very nicely) and has taken to her new crate so well! She will actually go and lie in her crate with door open and have a wee nap through the day. (think she likes the piece and quiet). Toilet training.... she does her business outside but unfortunately also seems to do it inside??? I take her out every 30 mins but she still manages to pee inside... how much water does their bladder hold!! It seems endless!!
I know want to start with lead training as she has now excepted her collar (eventually). Any ideas how I am meant to keep her attention??? Also how do I train her to come back to me when nothing I do grabs her attention- I have tried calling her name, clapping hands, whistling, high pitched voice but she just puts her nose and keeps on with whatever she is doing. Any suggestions? Also can anyone tell me how to add photos on so i can share her with you all???

Thanks, looking forward to hearing your suggestions. Judith

Welcome to the forum  :D

There is a link HERE that explains how to post photos.

How to keep her attention - Mmmm probably not the best person to advise.  I still have trouble with my Bailey and he is nearly 3!!    ;)   Consistency and perserverence I think are the best ways.  She is still very young and the world is a very exciting place for her at the moment.  Practice, practice and practice and when you think you have cracked it - keep going  ;)

There are some really experienced members on here that have loads of good ideas and suggestions, and I am sure they will be able to advise you a lot better than I can  ;)  :D

p.s ermmmm - as they get older their duracell's tend to take much more time and energy to run down, and re-charging gets a lot quicker!!!!

HI and welcome to COL.

Have you bought "The Perfect Puppy" by Gwen Bailey? It's such a help, especially in the early days.

To start recall, I would suggest calling his name when he is not distracted by anything else, then as he gets the ides, progress to slightly harder situations. I think the key is not to set them up for failure, but for success. That means giving commands you are pretty sure they can manage, then progressing.

Have you booked yourselves into a puppy class? It's essential for socialisation, but also gives you a kick start on training. Going through training exercises is a good, low-energy (for you) way to tire them out.

Enjoy your baby, and enjoy COL.

PS. Don't want to discourage you, but I was talking to our trainer last night and we recognised that "sit" is pretty much Buddy's default setting. The problem is getting him to "stand" on command!

Edited to point out that I have now noticed that I have called Roxi "he" throughout this post. Sorry!

:P  Hi everyone. Thanks for advice. Went out and bought 'The perfect puppy' by gwen bailey, very good. Tried our first walk on the lead today in the back garden, not too bad but she definitely doesnt like being told what to do! Will keep at it and let you know how we get on. Thanks for the hint on the photos, will give it a go.

judith and roxi

Hi Welcome Judith

I have Rusty who is nearly 6 months i also joined when we first got him and found Toilet Training a nightmare as you said he weed inside and outside the house and at one point i was at my wits end however it does get better. The only accidents i encounter now is in a morning if i'm not quick enough down the stairs or if i go out and leave him too long. However when i'm at home he usually goes and sits at the back door he doesn't cry or anything just sits there so i know he wants to go out :)

its just time thats all just keep doing everything you are and she we get the message eventually ;)

I can't give much advice on lead training i did a lot of sit, stay, fetch at home before i ever took him out and the first time i took him out i let him off the lead and he was fine didn't run off and came back when he was called he can't bear for me too be out of his sight so he never wonders very far (although theres time yet  )

Hope i've given you a little bit of advice and hope :P

post piccis soon

good luck

with love from Lou and Rusty
