Moving off puppy food - when?
« on: April 26, 2006, 11:28:14 AM »
Paddy's coming up to six months old - still showing no signs of going off his midday meal though, which I'll keep feeding till he's not interested.

However, at around the six month mark, should he be moving onto a different formulation of food or do puppies stay on puppy food (but just two meals a day) till they're a year old?  I've seen some "junior" foods in some dry ranges.  Paddy is eating Forthglade Lifestage puppy food and loves it - and it's settled his colitis down, so I only want to move him onto another Forthglade variety if I have to.

Thanks as always!

Denise

I think it depends on the brand of food.  Milo's on Nutro and they suggest feeding their puppy food until 12 months.  He's had even more energy than usual for the last couple of months  :D so I thought the puppy food might be too high protein and moved him onto adult last week, he's now nearly 11 months.  Don't know if all foods recommend puppy food until 1 year old, but I wouldn't have changed Milo to adult food at 6 months.  Maybe Forthglade say different tho - have you tried looking on their website for feeding recommendations?

Definitely get in touch with Forthglade to see if they can advise. I'm moving Clive on to Burns soon and asked htem whether to go to their puppy or adult version (Clive's 6 1/2 months and has been on Purina puppy up to now). They said to put him ont he pupy for a month or so longer, but that's because Purina has a higher amount of protein in it than Burns so he'll need the puppy stuff as a run-in period to the new food. I'd not have been able to make that decision without their advice.

Glad Forthglade is really helping paddy's colitis. Clive has a bit of this at the moment, though I think it's from all the cr*p he eats from walks and the garden  ph34r Nothing like your little boy's problems though. GOod luck with the change over if you do it.
