BARF - Do you supplement?
« on: January 11, 2008, 01:46:37 PM »
Just wondering really, i don't think i'm going to give any yet, but i am interested to see whether most people do or not. :blink:

Also those who do supplement, what do you give? :huh:

I give Kelp powder (1 teaspoon per day) and then Omega oils (3, 6, 9 + vit E - all in one bottle though!). My two had dry skin over the summer and I tried various oils to sort it out but it seems to be the Kelp in the end which made the difference as they've been fine since they were on that.  They get garlic and parsley in with their veg but I don't really count that as a supplement.

I put Keepers Mix (mixed supplement with kelp, seaweed etc in it) into the pulped veg mix and give an evening primrose capsule when I remember - every couple of weeks I guess.  Other than that I just make sure she has a very varied diet with extra bits like sardines, eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, garlic in addition to the usual BARF bones, meat and veg  ;)

Not regularly as I am not sure just how much is needed.

I sometimes put keepers mix in the veg, and sometimes give oil capsules. Not much else really, just lots of variety in his diet.

Regularly I give kelp tablets and flaxseed oil (or cod liver oil in winter)which are the main supplements, however I do use herbs and other things on a daily basis to add extra vitamins or as maintenance for cetain things, ie wheatgerm, bran, nettles, or dandelion, tree bark gruel, parsley, coconut, sesame seeds, crushed nuts, sunflower seeds, linseed mainly. Also if there is a certain situation going on with ones of the dogs ie illness or as in pregnancy then I use special herbs and natural foods to help with these things.

no we dont give supplements, she manages fine without.  The only thing she does have is an evening primrose oil capsule with her dinner each night.
We do make sure she has a wide variety of veg and meat though....inc nuts, seeds, yog, honey etc.

I bought Keepers' Mix and another "veggie-blend" powder from Dorwest Herbs.  I mix them together and give, daily, in Paddy's breakfast, the following:

1.  a measuring spoonful (as provided in the Keepers' Mix tub) of the combined Dorwest Herbs powders;
2.  a 200i.u. Vit E capsule;
3.  a 1000mg capsule (pierced and drain the oil into his raw food) of fish oil (I'm not sure, BlueGirl, but I thought there was Vitamin A overdose risk with cod liver oil, instead of fish body oil??);
4.  a liver tablet (dried liver) which contains a beta-glucans extract which is supposed to boost the immune system (jury's out on this one, but a Norwegian client makes the product and gave me a load....I scale back the amount of fresh liver in his food while I'm giving this).

Since starting the Vit E and fish oil, Paddy's coat looks even better than ever - really silky and soft - and the dry skin has never dared show its face again.  The herb powders are a "safety net" - like taking a multi-vitamin daily.

I'm not sure what you mean about the Vit A ? are you talking about in pregnancy? I never give CLO in pregnacy due to the high Vit A content, I just give before and after. Otherwise I give about 3-4mls of CLO daily to the dogs in winter.
