On the cleaning theme: handwash, hand cream (you will need it!), floor wipes and pet friendly disinfectant - I use Zoflora or the blue Dettol liquid.  ;)

puppy pads for toilet training and the odd little accident.

Don't puppy pads just teach a pup that it's is OK to go indoors, and so prolong the toilet training process ?

Probably true.  I only used them in Coco's crate at night as I did not get up in the night to let her out.  Anywhere other than the crate and she shredded them anyway - same with newspaper  ::)  I took her out every 30 mins or less at first so that she quickly learned to go outside.  It was not too long before she could go through the night as well  ;)

I let Paddy cry - and cry - and cry.  And I bitterly regret it: he was lonely and scared.  But it IS a very personal choice and different dogs react different ways.  If I was doing it again - I'd have the puppy with me in my room in a box for a few nights, then put him in the kitchen.  He'd still cry first night in the kitchen but he'd be less scared/disorientated overall having been in his new home for a few days.

You asked in your original post about dominance theory - humans having to assert themselves as "top dogs".  Dogs know that we aren't dogs and don't try this with us.  Basically, it's an out-dated school of thought/training.  Some of its methods work, but not for the reasons they say.  I'd read "The Perfect Puppy" by Gwen Bailey, as already mentioned, for great stuff on socialisation and training simple commands, but disregard the stuff about dominance.  The other book which lots of people on here recommend, and I wish I'd read it in the very early days, is "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson - explains behaviour, training, remedying problems and debunks the dominance nonsense clearly and based on science.

Good luck - and yayyy to handcream and lots of kitchen towels.  I got dry, split hands in two or three days from clearing all the wee and poo up and washing hands every two minutes!

I collect old cocker books and just got one: "Our Friend the Cocker Spaniel" edited by Rowland Johns (1932) and was interested to see this on the subject:

"Some new owners ejaculate {sic!!} 'Well, he will have to get used to being alone, can't have him in the bedroom always'. Yet for the first few nights, until he learns that his new home has no terrors lurking in wait for him, there is no reason why he should not be in a room where someone is sleeping. He will thus soon learn that he is with friends and soon the longings for his old kennel life and companions will be forgotten in the knowledge that he is safe and secure amongst those who care for him."
