Walkies?
« on: January 10, 2008, 08:49:56 AM »
Hi guys

just curious to know how often and for how long every one walks their dogs?  Im thinking that working cockers may need abit more than the shows? is that right? or are they just as over filled with energy!  im walking Quincy for about an hour every day? is that enough for him, he gets alot of play time at home too.

an hour a day is about right.
you can walk cocker spaniels for 10 hours each day and they are still full of energy and mischief it is just a cocker spaniel thing. they have a humourous and enthusiastic nature .

There has been threads on this before and Im sure some people do more!

I'm glad you have said that though as Roxy has about an hour a day weekdays, bit more at the weekend.

She is only 7 months so I don't like her to overdo it but do people think an hour is sufficient then, that includes off lead running and ball chasing some days!

Ours get an hour a day, the lurchers and Jesse in the morning, our pyrenees in the evening. On the morning walk, the dogs are off-lead for about 40 minutes of the walk, our pyrenees however is always on the flexi lead.

Griffin is 8 months (ish) and he has a 4.5-5 mile walk a day which obviously means he goes about 15 miles by the time he has finished. It takes us anywhere between just over an hour and an hour and three quarters depending on how energetic I'm feeling! lol.

The more exercise they have the more they need, so I feel its worth sticking to whatever you find manageable.

Fern gets a 30-40 min walk in the morning and another at tea time of about 20-30 mins but sometimes just one long walk in the middle of the day and she's fine with this - her weight is good and she is happy lounging about quietly for the rest of the time or sniffing around and playing in the garden.  If we have visitors or go see people she goes bananas but that's cos she's a cocker!   It said somewhere on COL recently that pups should have no more than 5 mins walk per month of life so 4 months would be 20 mins but by the time they are a year old its unlimited.  Something like that

Up to maturity (in cockers ,about 12 months old), exercise should be limited in order to avoid causing damage to developing joints which only becomes apparent when the dogs are much older  :-\

5 minutes per month of life is widely accepted as guide - that is per walk, so for a 7 month old dog, a couple of walks a day of 35 minutes or so would probably be recommended.    The occasional longer walk is not going to do any harm - but daily long walks could be lead to problems in the future :(

Hamish is 6.5 months old and he gets 2 offlead walks of about 35 mins, plus a wee onlead dander of about 20 mins in the evening.  Does this seem ok ?  I don't want to overdo it & cause him harm.

Doggone - that sounds fine for Hamish, but the amount pink carys is taking her dog out sounds a bit excessive for the age of her dog.
