Henry has an eye problem now
« on: March 03, 2013, 07:55:30 PM »
If it's not one thing, it's another....

Having finally (hopefully) sorted out Henry's endless bottom issues (campylobacter, hookworm and tapeworm) he woke up this morning with gunky red eyes. His right eye is particularly bad - looks like a bloodhound. There's a bit of discharge (yellowy-greeny) so I think it must be conjunctivitis. Plus the other eye's a bit red too, so I think it must be that (if it was just one eye I'd be worried it was something in it). The corneas look all right in the light. It's just the inner eyelids are very red, and in the right one the lid is a bit swollen. I just phoned the emergency vet and she recommended just bathing it in warm water with a cotton pad (not ball as they're more scratchy) - and not to use a saline solution. And to get him in first thing tomorrow.

So back to the vets first thing to get it looked at. Hopefully it's nothing more serious, poor little mite. I've retrieved the cone of shame from a friend to put on him overnight so he doesn't scratch them.

Poor you and Henry. I kind of know how you feel as I seem to be spending half my time at the vet's with either Lovely or Spud at the mo, I even have a favourite chair in the waiting room! Hope his sore eyes are soon ok. I wonder if all his parasite infections have made him a bit run down. I think the high number of foxes in and around London might well contribute to the worm issue, mum and dad seem to have loads visit their garden. Really hope he's feeling better soon.

Poor Henry, hope the vet gives him some medicine that makes his eye better very quickly.

Just been to the vet - Henry had the green stuff in his eye and they found a small corneal ulcer. He's been given eye-drops to use and anti-inflammatories for a week, then another check-up in a week's time and straight back to vet if it gets worse or doesn't seem to get better. The vet was reassuring and said they clear up well in young dogs and that it was probably from a scratch from playing with another dog.

Sorry to read this, Sophie.

It's been a testing few weeks for poor Henry  :luv:

Hope all is resolved quickly and painlessly and that we see you and Henry out and about soon.

Henry seems pretty much the same after a couple of days of treatment, although there's slightly less gunk coming out. I'm keeping the cone on him when he's at home, to stop him scratching. He seems a little depressed about that. There was also a tiny pile of stick/bile on the carpet this morning, probably totally unrelated. Oh, and he woke up to go out and poo at 2am (thanks Henry!).

He's also being a right pain on walks - literally will not walk anywhere, and I don't know if his eyesight is affected (although he's absolutely fine once in the park at the end of the road, off the lead). I let him play with another puppy today, which I'm not supposed to, but he just loves it so much! He's been fine having the eye-drops put in, with the help of Primula in a tube (he even licks it when the lid's on!). He's on Chloramphenicol eye-drops for a week.

Anyone else whose dog has had an ulcer on the cornea - how long did it take to clear up? Were there any complications?

I have never had a dog with the problem but have suffered one myself....it's so painful, also when I went outside any wind or cold air made my eye sting. I would have thought his eye would have improved by now, might be worth popping back to the vets. I guess there is a risk of infection.

Poor Henry - when I saw the title of this thread my heart nearly stopped!!!!  Hope he is on the mend now.  I'm fairly sure that  saw another thread about corneal ulcers not too long ago - I'll have a trawl and see if I can find it.  Big licks for Henry from Ozzy, and big  :bigarmhug: for you. x

Edit - I see you found the thread.

Took Henry back to the vets again this morning, as his eye doesn't seem much better. There was a different vet and she found another tiny ulcer, hidden under his third eyelid (which is swollen to protect his eye). She managed to scrape a bit of stuff off both ulcers, and we'll go back again on Monday. It was horribly traumatic, with my poor baby screaming his head off as they were trying to hold him still to put the fluorescent drops in. They made me leave the room and he did calm down a bit, but was still whining in pain/misery/discomfort. I was only just managing to hold back the tears!

Just wish my poor little fella would get better, but sion and honormum (thank you both!) have at least given me some advice and reassurance, as well as time-scales - it's not something that goes away quickly, and may need minor surgery if it doesn't start to show healing by early next week.
