Tail - should it look like a flagpole??!!
« on: March 06, 2013, 08:19:50 PM »
The feathering on Alfie's tail has never been trimmed particularly short, but when my son brought him home from the groomers 3 weeks ago, I thought she'd forgotten to do his tail, but then I saw it had been tidied near his tailbone. However 3 weeks later the feathering is 5-6 inches long and looks like he's flying a flag!! He really doesn't like getting his tail brushed so just wondered if a show cocker's tail should be so long? My groomer makes a lovely job of him but feel this 'long' look spoils the overall appearance, but then wondered if this was the correct length she was going by.

It's really down to how you like it to look. Some show people take nearly all the feathering off whereas others don't and leave enough so that the tail looks in balance with the rest of the dog. Personally I keep the feathering on Louis' tale fairly short as he doesn't have very profuse feathering anywhere so if I left it too long he'd look all tail and no body :005:

:005:  I'm giggling away this. Both my girls are docked and I refer to their tails as their "surrender flags".  I don't like being able to see their anuses when they are trimmed so their feathering is quite long and then it flaps around.  Hoping one of my show friends at Crufts might be able to do a quick fix!

Charlie's tail feathering is quite short - I used to love it long, but now I'm used to it short I like it...

Long tail feathers

I'm aware this is a terrible photo but it shows his short tail off (although it's a longer version of a short tail - I like it this length, as I get some feathering, but not too much).

The first pic is exactly as Alfie's tail is at the moment and in fact his coat is the same length all over! I think I'd like it in between Charlie's pic 1 and pic 2 in length! I was just wondering what the 'correct' length was, and thinking maybe the groomer was going by a recommended length.

It's generally around the length of it in the shorter picture. At first I wasn't convinced, but it's easier to manage being shorter.
