feeding query?
« on: December 12, 2013, 08:54:36 AM »
Bailey is 8 weeks old, we feed her 4 small bowls of dried Skiners field and trial puppy food, which the breeder gave us, are any of you familiar with it? We have a huge bag to get through, so wont be changing her on to anything else very soon.

She has around 4 poos which are quite solid and always manages them on the paper, clever girl :)

We cant buy it locally so I will have to think of a different make, there is so much to choose from so not sure what. We have an excellent pet shop near us, so will see what different types of food they stock, would like a good quality one.

Her feeding schedule is 7am, 12.30pm, 5pm then 10pm, similar times to the breeder. Is the 10 pm meal too late?

As I said in my last post the breeder didnt give us a diet sheet or much advice, it is our first dog, so any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Elaine

How much are you actually feeding her? If you haven't got any I'd invest in a small set of kitchen scales (mine are digital, about £10 from Argos) so you can precisely measure her food.

With the Internet food is never far away, so if she's fine on Skinners then leave her on it.

I think 10pm is way too late for last meal. My dog Harry's Meals were 7am, 11am, 3pm & 6pm but we dropped down to 3 quite quickly if memory serves.

I have heard of it, you could go online, put in Skinners puppy food in your search engine and it will (hopefully) come up with a list of places you can buy it online, or try individual companies, Zooplus, Amazon, Vet uk (they sell food too) etc. It will probably be cheaper online too, but look out for any delivery costs when you compare prices.

Agree 10pm does sound rather late, could you bring it forward in maybe half hour stages?

Yes will try and bring it forward.
Meals weigh about 32kgs, a bit less at bedtime.
She eats it and doesnt seem to be looking for more.

This is an informative website about commercially produced dog foods http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk/. It has a comprehensive guide on how to understand the ingredients listed (not always as straightforward as you think as some innocent sounding ingredients can be poor quality) and explains the nutritional value of ingredients and which ones are the best to have in a food and which ones should be avoided.

There's also a dog food directory, listing foods alphabetically, with an expert review of the ingredients, quality of food and value for money. Skinner's Puppy has a 3 * rating, which is quite good, but the review points out that the main ingredient is rice, which provides lots of carbs but not a lot of nutrition and that the protein is a mix of meat (good) and pea (not so good).

Choosing the right dog food can be amazingly complicated and even if you choose what seems like a really good one it may still not suit your dog. But, armed with a cup of tea or two and some spare time, I think whichdogfood is definitely worth some study to help you make an informed decision if you decide to change when you get to the end of the bag of Skinners.

Yes its 32 grms, oops!
Will check that website out, thanks.
Its been so manic with a new puppy, working, only part-time thankfully, looking after the family and the house, and so near to Christmas!
I'm frantically trying to read all the puppy books!
This forum is so helpful and imformative :)
