groomer clipped my girl instead of stripping!
« on: February 19, 2014, 01:28:49 PM »
Hi,  I took my beautiful light blue roan girl, Mia,  to the groomer for her second visit today. (she is 5 years old and has been home groomed for 4 years after bad grooming experience).  Her first visit with the groomer was fine, although Mia was totally stressed out for a week afterwards.  Todays grooming was a disaster, the groomer had written down that she clipped mia last time.  So I got the shock of my life when I went to collect her and she has clipped her whole back very short.  She now looks like a dalmatian with feathers!  I was so upset.  she was very apologetic and did not charge me.  She said it will take 5 months or more to get her coat back for stripping, and that she would need to see her again in 5 or 6 weeks to check her coat and strip out any new woolly hairs (free of charge).  What would peoples advice be?  Should I stick with her?  If she had stripped her coat I would  have been very happy with the shape she gave her, just don't like the clipped look at all.  Anyone else had this kind of problem? :'(

Not the look you asked for  >:D there isn't a lot you can do, at least she hasn't charged you and is prepared to carry on free of charge. I remember when Ollie had his first cut, I hated it but I did get used to it and now always have him cut short. Remember the coat will grow back.

I'd have hit the roof...however it is only hair and it will grow back.

I'd be inclined to go back for the next free bit, and take it from there.

Not a lot you can do now it's been done  >:(

It'll grow back quickly  If she's not going to charge take Mia back so she can strip out any new hairs.
At least she won't do it wrong again if you carry on using her.

I'd be asking her if she has hand stripped cockers before and has she any pics as I would feel let down about her being clipped and a bit worried that if you carry on with her, free grooms or not if at the end of the day she hasn't stripped one before and you are back to square one.

she has hand stripped, she is a dog grooming teacher and has been grooming for many years.  She hand stripped her on the first visit, but on the second visit she said she had written it down on her record card as Clipped, which is why she clipped her.  She has texted me and apologised again, I am really angry and confused as to whether or not to go back.

This does sound like a genuine mistake with much apology and no charge for your next visit but although it is fur and will grow back the question is what will it grow back like ?

Does one clip damage the coat so it re grows back wooly....i'm thinking not but in answer to your question, seeing as she was so stressed out after the first visit ( for a week you said) i wouldn't go back i would continue to home groom, far less stressful for her and no misunderstanding in what you want, though mistakes are inevitable even grooming at home but not to the extent of clippers instead of fingers  :shades:

I have clipped Blue's coat and also a gold boy and both their coats have grown back with no major problems. I have found if a dog has been neutered it tends to grow a bit wooly but not always.
It does sound as though the groomer has made a genuine mistake  and is very sorry.
Obviously she can't change what's been done but I'm sure she won't make the same mistake again.

I understand that you are genuinely upset. Any of us would be, however I agree with above this seems a genuine accident of which she has admitted fault and given you compensation. Groomers are only human like any one else. They make mistakes. Hair grows, so it will grow back and if it has only been clipped once chances are it won't effect the coat too badly if at all. Especially if your dog is not neutered as stated above also. If you are unsure about taking her to the groomers again then you could maybe try learning to do it yourself. It can be very satisfying to do and you will know just how you want it. You could try a comb with an elastic band wound through the teeth combed through the coat at a slight angle, so it catches the coat. This effectively handstips the coat the same way as finger and thumb.  :D

To be honest, if you have found someone who is prepared to hand-strip I would stick with them as we are few and far between. Mistakes do happen unfortunately

Look at it this way, she wont do it again, so if you were happy with her I would let her sort it out, I know it was a shock but her hair will grow back

Yes, it sounds to me like a genuine mistake and I am sure the groomer, if she is a good one as she sounds to be, is probably feeling mortified by her error. I would definitely go back, especially as she has been so apologetic, offered free work etc. Give her the chance to make up for her error. Getting - and keeping - a good reputation is hard work, and as she can't work miracles and stick the fur back on, she is doing her best to make up for what has happened. Give her the benefit of the doubt.
