Penny has been attacked and it's all my fault!
« on: October 07, 2014, 06:35:38 AM »
We are staying in a country town at the moment, and I gratefully accepted a friends invitation to leave Penny at her place for the day while we did some non dog things. They have a lovely little wire haired terrier who Penny gets on well with.

She told me, but I guess it didn't register, that she was also minding two whippets for the day.

When I arrived both whippets growled at me and Penny, but I didn't take any notice. I was too caught up in what I was doing for the day.

When I left Penny whimpered. I left her alone with the dogs.

When I returnedPenny was cowering in a corner of the yard. She didn't move in the car on the way back to where we are staying.
When I touched her nuzzle by accident she yelped. She has a hole right through her muzzle, coming out on her inside lip where she has clearly been attacked by one or other of the whippets.
I feel so bad!
The vet has given her antibiotic and pain killing injections. She has taken herself off to the corner of the bathroom and won't move. I desperately hope she is ok tomorrow.
What a fool I was! But my friend said the whippets were really friendly and would never hurt anybody!
I won't be doing that again!

So sorry to read that Penny has had such a nasty, painful experience.  :'( I meet with a large group of dog walkers daily and I must say, that the only problem I have comes from a very aggressive whippet and greyhound. It's baffling, because neither breeds are known for such behaviour. In fact, quite the opposite. I've always thought them to be very placid, affectionate dogs and I'm sure the vast majority are.

I hope Penny is feeling a little better today and he wound heals fast. I'm sure it wasn't your fault, so don't blame yourself. We all make mistakes and sorry this happened to you and Penny. xxx

you mustn't blame yourself , so often dogs work these things out peacfully and i think i may have assumed that the dogs were just being territorial but if i was told they were friendly i would have belived them. i am surprised you had to find the injury yourself , it is a bad injury and i wonder why the attack wasn't noticed. i would be so upset if such a thing happened to a dog i was looking after. still i'm not trying to blame your frined and it was kind of her to try and help out. i do hope your dog will be ok, needs a few quite days!(and you i think!)

Aw, so sorry Penny got bitten, gentle hugs coming her way  :bigarmhug:

My mam has a whippet (Charlie) and whilst he is the most lazy, chilled out hound I know, if Archie gets too bouncy around him, he'll tell him off firmly.  He always looks quite fierce showing his teeth but he's never actually bitten him but whippets can be sensitive, jumpy dogs at times and not always tolerant of other dogs.
Both taken away from us far too soon. x  RIP Angels Odie & Archie, causing mayhem at the Rainbow, no doubt!

Poor Penny and poor you. Don't blame yourself. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but it can make us beat ourselves up is we let it.  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
It may not have been the whippets. Even if all the dogs got on while their owners were around it's possible that your friend's terrier may have got territorial with three extra dogs alone in his house. You'll never know for sure so just give a Penny lots of hugs and maybe an extra treat or two. Give yourself a glass of something medicinal too :shades:

So sorry to hear about poor Penny, I hope she has a full and speedy recovery.
As others have said it's not your fault you left her with your friend in good faith, you would never have left her if you thought something like that would happen. So you are really not to blame as Archie Bean said "Hindsight is a wonderful thing" Just give her extra love and cuddles until she feels better.

:bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:  ..hugs to you both x
