New pup with upset tum.. Bit tmi
« on: May 27, 2016, 02:30:18 PM »
Hi all new user here after a bit of advice please. We've had 13 week old Ted for a couple of weeks. Fit, glossy coat, lots of energy but his food seems to go straight through him. V smelly and almost runny.. Sorry tmi. We've gradually changed him from Chudleys to Wainwrights puppy dry mix, as the breeder suggested but it's not settled down. Lots of clearing up in the night :(. Yesterday I gave him some scrambled egg and today cooked chicken. It seems to have settled his tum, but not sure what to do next? Should I carry on with this for a few days and gradually introduce the Wainwrights again or try something else? I don't want to upset him anymore by chopping and changing.

Rosie had terrible runs, so bad We had to give up any thought of the cage, for weeks.A few weeks of chicken/ fish and rice and then prescription kibble settled Her down a bit and since then it has been trial and error re food. She had so much chicken etc She then wouldnt eat just kibble so slowly We have introduced wet food, Natures Harvest , and this seems to be ok ish.She liked Wainwrights kibble as long as it was mixed with anything home cooked, not always convenient, the wet food went straight through Her.Our vet said to keep up with the chicken/ fish for a few days then very, very slowly introduce a new food.If it reoccurs then its back to chicken etc until tum has settled then try something else.It does really seem to be trial and error and if you find something that suits stick with it as switchingfoods can upset the tum.You will get wonderful advice on here, I am still a newbie, and have found the help you get invaluable. Ps Rosie is now  nearly 7 months and We still have explosions at times so havent quite cracked this food thing and contemplating trying raw food.Good luck.

You are definitely not the only one to have a young pup with a sensitive tum. Henry barely had a solid poop until we got him onto Burn puppy kibble at about 5 months. Trial and error for months, on and off the chicken and rice, slowly introducing new foods to find one that suits him. He has got bored with the kibble and now has ⅔ kibble, ⅓ Nature Diet wet food mashed together. Poops softer but still pick-up-able, which is all we really want! I have a feeling the more natural the food the better, which mean more expensive and nothing from the supermarket. EXCEPT our stand by for upset tummy, which is Chappie. Very, very bland, settles his tummy very quickly. Your one is probably a bit young for Chappie, though. We didn't give it until he was 7 months.

Hi...congratulations on having a new puppy!  ;) At this age the most important thing is for them to eat so certainly feed whatever you find stays there long enough to do good (chicken, egg, boiled white fish and rice all brilliant). If you want to try commercial food then just tiny amounts added so that no symptoms are produced!. Then carry on upping it. Also you should look into probiotics - your puppy will be losing all the 'good' bacteria which help get all the nutrients out of his food by the digestive process. You can buy various products to restore them or ask your vet what he recommends. Some people give cottage cheese  (tiny half spoonful and then build up) or if this doesn't work try goat's milk plain yoghurt.

As others have said it's a question of finding what works for him. The big thing is he gets enough calories because he's growing so fast right now.    Good luck.

Just want to say Hello to you and delly belly Ted .
It can get a bit disheartening when you get a little problem like this with a new pup. It does not figure in our " new puppy expectations". You and him will get this sorted and it will become a distant memory. ;)

Thank you so much for your replies. We've had two weeks of endless washing and clearing up every night. So frazzled. Good to know Teds belly is not alone!

We had everyone in the neighbourhood donating newspapers when Rosie was really bad, and even though it was February windows open all the time. Once She could go out We planned trips around the poo times as We never knew if it would be pickupable  or not, took to taking a bottle of water with Me just in case. And the worse eruptions were always right in front of people, or shops, beach huts, an E type jag at a classic car show........just as well We love Her to bits.

Oh I never thought I'd be so pleased to see a normal poo! :005:
He's gone from pushing 60 grams of kibble around his bowl, to wolfing down chicken, rice etc.
Only thing is he's always hungry now.
Any suggestions to how much he should be eating? If I'd put the whole chicken down I think he might have eaten it all.

I would make sure you feed small meals and more of them - whenever I've had pups with dodgy stomachs I do little and often (I up to 6 a day until they feel better then back to 4 a day - they eat same amount during the day but its spread out differently but the smaller amounts allow stomach not to get overburdened even if they are hungry - too much at once can make them sick again)

You can add small amounts of steamed carrot or swede to his chicken and rice to bulk it up. (I'm sure you're aware of this but just a reminder that a whole cooked chicken has bones and they are an absolute no-no!) I'd really agree with the small and often feeding regime and not worry about his eating too much. He'll have lost ground with the tummy upset so putting on a bit of weight will be good insurance in case it happens again. While they are growing even a bit of podge is no big crime. Once all his muscles and bones are made you can worry about a health and fitness programme.

Thank you. He seems to like butternut squash so will add that.  So glad to have found this forum. :)

Same problem with Ela, never had a solid poop until she was 5 months or so. Then we put her on chicken and rice (half half, not very much) for 10 days and slowly introduces Simpson salmon and potato sensitive puppy (great support too). Haven't had a "soft serve" since :) She is now 8 months. Good luck.
