Travelling home from the breeder

Hi all.  This is my first of (no doubt) many questions.  Next week I am bringing my 10 week old puppy home from the breeders.  We will have a 2 hour car journey, my husband will be driving.  Should I have the puppy on my lap in the front seat, in a travelling crate on the back seat, or me in the back with the pup?  Is he likely to be travel sick, and what about toilet breaks?  I don't imagine it will be an easy first car journey, and wish it were shorter, but there's no avoiding it.  We'll arrive home early afternoon, so will have time for him to recover a bit before bedtime.  Poor little chap is going to be on a steep learning curve for a while!

Hi, all 3 of mine were on my lap (2nd one had a 5 hour journey home) and all were fine. I did have a cardboard box and blankets with me but didn't need it. I also took a puppy pad so he could wee on the ground safely. No sickness experienced but subsequently he is sick when in car so I'm gradually building it up. Good luck!

yes, with puppy pad on lap. We always argue over who has to drive and who has the puppy cuddles  :005:

Thank you.  I will enjoy my first puppy cuddles on the way home then!  A good idea about taking puppy pads for safe toilet breaks.

of course on your lap. got to start off as you mean to go on (a life time with a dog on your lap).  paper towel is handy for accidents and a waste bag incase .

Yes, I had Humphrey on my lap too. He did get a bit wriggly at times though -(it was a very hot day) so I think if we'd have had further to drive, the back seat might have been a bit more comfortable and less of a distraction for the driver.

I took a travelling crate, puppy pad, chew toy and water with me, but basically to look the part as there was no way that little boy wasn't going to be cuddled all the way home  ;)

We travelled about 2 ish hours. He spent lots on s lap with puppy pad. I also took a cat litter tray with a puppy pad on it. He slept in that for quite some time too. I did stop half way as it was so hot but he didn't want to move just slept. Good luck.

Because I went to pick Toby up on my own (well all three of them at different times) I used a small pet carrier. Initially for Toby I had it in the back with Branston and Minstrel in the bigger crate, but Toby had other ideas and did a houdini and I found him wedged right against the back of the big boys crate fast asleep. So I put him back in the carrier, secured shut this time with a lead round for good measure and sat it on the front passenger seat and didn't hear a squeak out of him for the rest of the journey.  :luv:

I took some newspaper  for any accidents and paper towels, hand wipes and a bin bag.

Just make sure the first journey is a positive one.  Line your seats and your lap with lots of towels.  Be prepared for sickness too!  Find out when the breeder is going to feed your pup before your journey.
If your pup has a wee or is sick don't make a fuss.

I took montys bed with me (it was giant at this point!) and lined it with towels and puppy pads. I then had that on my lap all the way home! I took lots of puppy pads, poo bags, towels, wet wipes for all the 'what ifs'... Little monts slept the whole way home!!

Oh lucky you, I remember bring Dexter home and I had to drive while my OH had the little chap on her lap. Just ensure that you have all you will need for any mess and also something nice for it to snuggle into.

Ha! I was a Girl Guide, so 'always prepared' lol!  I will keep my fingers crossed that he sleeps a lot.  The breeder knows what time we are collecting him, and how far we need to drive, so will feed him appropriately for his journey.

Also if you do need to stop and you have a boot area, line it with newspaper and puppy pads so that your puppy can have a walk around and a wee / poo as well while you have a cuppa (obviously boot lid up and you are standing next to the boot)!!.  Saves he/she having to go onto the ground.
