introduction and crate/bedtime advice please
« on: July 19, 2016, 02:44:44 PM »
hi .. well i am a mum already to a 9yr old choc labrador called bosun who is just amazing .. and i brought home a 10 week old cocker spaniel on sunday who we have names Mazey .. she is adorable, but im panicking.

she was born in outdoor kennels as her father is a working cocker and mum a show breed they are both kenneled outside.
she has been used to going inside etc so that isnt so bad.

when bosun was a puppy we crate trained him for nighttimes and if we had to pop out and he was amazing from day one, no crying or whining etc.

mazey on the other hand wow ... 1st night she cried for around 10 mins and slept until 4 am then went out for a wee and poo and i took her to cuddlw with me until i got up.
last night was a different matter.. she screamed and cried for a long time i took her crate in my bedroom and again crying until she almost tipped it over by jumping up.. she ended up in bed with me but wanted to play wouldnt settle etc.(im so so tired today)
i popped her in her crate while i washed my hair this morning and she cried her loudest even tho bosun is around and im still in the house.
ive spent today clicker training her into crate for a treat and goving her meals in there so she thinks its a cool place. but im at the point where i am dreading tonight :(
is there anything i can do ?
many thanks

Hi, first thing I will say is 'you are not alone'!
I've had a rare old time with my Blue and his nocturnal 'routine', and you can read all about it here: http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=117027.0
I had really good advice from all the members here, and perseverance has paid off.  I won't lie and say it was easy, but 5 weeks down the line I am feeling a whole lot better about it all.  Hopefully Mazey will catch on quicker because of the good example of Bosun (fab name for a Lab, by the way!).
Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

He has a small crate inside a larger pen, down in the kitchen.  I slept on the floor next to the pen for a few nights, and he thought that was great, but had to stop as I'm not in great shape physically and it caused a few issues with my health.
Instead I started sneaking off to bed as soon as he was asleep and coming down every couple of hours to let him out to toilet, then settled him back down, wait til asleep again, then back to bed myself.  A few times I miscalculated and he's already done it, sometimes I got it just right.
I'm still getting up with him every 2.5 - 3 hours, but he's a lot more settled and less clingy now.  He doesn't make a noise unless he needs the toilet and I'm not there, so I think it's just a sign of his general maturing and confidence developing.  At first he was like a limpet, wouldn't let me out of his sight, but now he is quite relaxed if I leave him in the (secure) garden and go back indoors for a few minutes - in fact he barely notices I'm not there!
We've also cracked a couple of other issues - potty training is complete, he's now clean and dry day and night, and he is also walking a lot better - at first he would just refuse to walk, sit or lie down and I would not get anywhere with him, but I started walking with a neighbour and her dog, and that helped a lot.  He still doesn't like going out in the rain though, but he will force himself if he needs to toilet!
I suppose, at the end of the day, you realise it's not the dog that's been trained, it's you!
