bad news
« on: November 07, 2024, 03:55:21 PM »
after my last post i thought i would update you and hope for any advice that might help.  maisie went into the vets today because of her incontinence and recently not eating her usual fav food.  she had blood tests and vet said she has kidney failure.  they are trying to source a renal diet that is grain free because she is allergic to grains.  im gutted she is  12 but is still full of beans still a puppy at heart.  after getting home from the vet she had a nap and when i walked in the room she is stood there wagging her tail with her fav turkey toy in her mouth.   i wondered if anyone had any advice,  maisie loves treats and im unsure what to give her treat wise.  thanks all.

No advice I‘m afraid but just wanted to send support and hope you can find a suitable food and treats for little Maisie. It never fails to warm the heart seeing how those little tails keep wagging even when they‘re obviously not  feeling on top of the world  :luv:
:bigarmhug: to you both, hope someone else on here will be able to give you more concrete advice soon.
Xx

So sorry to hear this. My Olive developed kidney failure, I joined a Facebook page that offered goos advice. I had to cook her meals as due to her pancreatitis finding food was difficult. I cooked veggies and white fish, she could also have rice and pasta.

Pooch and Mutt do a grain free renal food and many treats and supplements. Miss Molly is on their health and digest kibble  because of her "delicate "belly".   Their customer service are brilliant ( phone or WhatsApp) and very helpful.   Soopa are another firm than do healthy treats

hi all maisie is doing well on hills kd and pooch and mutt kibble.  the only issue is she is really hungry all the time its like she cant think of anything else even on walks her brain is now just searching for bits of food.  im giving her some rice or potatoe  and veg in her meals, giving her 3 meals a day and she eats it all but she is still really hungry all the time.  could it be because of the low protein of the renal food.  i need to find a solution as she is really obsessing over it, always been great off lead ignoring people but now trying to jump up people to see if they have treats.

Humphrey‘s also on a renal diet and we‘re having similar problems, he has raw beef mince with 20+ percent fat, rice and vegetables and a renal supplement (to compensate for the bone and offal which he‘s not allowed). My vet recommended a nutrionist and she gave me food plan and suggested adding additional water to the food to help fill him up and also encourage him to drink more. I add more water to  the rice and cook it for about half an hour longer than I would for  ouselves, which also bulks it up and makes it easier to digest. He gets raw carrot and vegetables instead of treats. I‘ve also started feeding 3 times a day, he gets his last meal before we go to bed and that does seem to have stopped the early morning licking his lips and signs of acidity.
Humphrey‘s food obsession seems to have got worse as he‘s got older although I‘m not convinced he‘s actually that hungry, I think its habit/boredom/ age/ cocker spaniel!
Hope you can find a solution.
