Gone right off his food
« on: October 23, 2025, 12:01:03 PM »
Tango (12yr4mth) has a history of pancreatitis so I?m reasonably used to flare ups and appetite fluctuations but he?s recently just gone off his food almost completely - except when we go for a little walk when he?ll usually accept as many of his low fat treats as I offer him!

When I put his normal food (Purina EN and/or chappie) down he virtually recoils from it and my usual tactic of adding some tasty treat (tuna or chicken topper) doesn?t really work any more. He might pick at it eventually but that?s usually it. I?m going out to get some chicken this afternoon and put it with some plain rice just to see if he?ll eat that.

I realise he?s getting old so sleeps more these days too and he doesn?t seem to be in any obvious pain or discomfort. I?ve got a vet appointment tomorrow but just wondered if anyone else has had this with their dog?

Eeeek, I?m getting old too as I just realised I posted a very similar thread to this a few weeks ago which I?d completely forgotten about!

He?s been on the low dose of prednisone for a few weeks now and been ?up and down? during that time so will see what the vet says tomorrow.

Sorry I can't help, but wishing you good luck tomorrow at the vets, hope they can help Tango.

First I must thank you ladies for your kind replies.

Half an hour before the appointment, the vets phoned to say they had to deal with some emergencies so as ours is an ongoing problem, could I please defer the visit until Tuesday, which I agreed to do as I like to see the same vet who has been dealing with him for a couple of years now so knows him quite well.

This was also in part because Tango has actually had a bit better day today, he ate some Purina en this morning and at lunchtime without too much bribery and has generally just been more alert.
It may be total coincidence but as he was not eating much yesterday I actually forgot to give him the prednisone. In view of the improvement today I didn?t give it to him again so it will be very interesting to see how he is tomorrow!

I?ll keep you updated??.

Pleased to read Tango is feeling better, good of the vet to call you (not sure mine would have done).

Maybe the tablets need changing, you could use this as a trial period?

Hoping the improvement continues  :luv: :luv:

So I think the vet is, to be honest, not quite sure what?s going on now with tango and his digestion problems which, given how the pancreatitis can flare up for no apparent reason, is not altogether a surprise!

She Checked his tummy and said there was no real discomfort so that was good and he?s eating a combination of Purina and chappie again (with a bit of bribery) - it?s just his runny rear end that?s still a disappointment. He can spot/smell canigest paste or similar if I put that in the food and avoids it as I thought that may help but no chance! I?m just starting to put fortiflora in his food, which he seems to accept, to see if that might do the trick.

Regarding the steroids, apparently I shouldn?t have stopped them completely suddenly so we?re going back onto a low dose for a couple of weeks, see what happens and then decide whether to continue or phase them out.

In himself though he?s not too bad for an old boy so let?s see what the next few weeks bring. I think these ups and downs are just going to become more frequent and something we have to accept. Come to think of it, that actually sounds just like what my gp says to me too?.😂
