How to get smilies in message

Probably being very thick but if I try to get one of the smolies into a message I just get the name of it as in  :huh:. What am I doing wrong clearly you don't just click on them and they appear.  :'(

If you're stupid then I am too. It happens to my posts. I've noticed that I sometimes need a space   :P between the words and the smilies, or some punctuation. If it's in the middle of a sentence and there is no eg:005:punctuation or space you get the name of it as you said. I now try a preview before I post to check it out.
