Help regarding jumping.
« on: January 19, 2007, 10:02:07 AM »
Hi All,

I'm quite new to hear I have a 5 month old cocker called Alfie. He he's an adorable dog but we are really struggling to stop him jumping up at people and at the couch,he jumps at our nieces and they are only little and he pushes them over :embarassed:

Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Thanks xx

I'm certainly no expert but could you try distracting him with fave toy and then treating all the time he's good??

Sure someone will be along shortly to give you some better advice!!

Poppy is nearly a year and she still does this but only because we're not consistent.  :P
When I'm being really firm with her then none of us make a fuss of her at all or make eye contact with her when she jumps up. I tell her to sit and when she does this I make a big fuss of her.
It does work - when we were being good, my mum, who is really scared of the jumping was delighted to tell me that she hadn't done it at all. I'm afraid we rather blew it over the Christmas holidays  ph34r

I was told to turn my back on Max & ignore him when I get home - Now I just get bruises on the back of my legs instead of the front  :005:

We have the same thing with Zorro (5 months as well). Consistancy is the most important thing - we've been saying "AH-AH" when he jumps up and then asking him to sit. Once he sits, he gets all the fuss he wants, but not before, and if he then jumps up again we go through the same routine. He is gradually getting the idea although he's a very enthusiastic boy and this gets the better of him sometimes!

Have a look at the KC websitehttp://, they do a really good training thing for small children , how to behave around dogs. Theres good stuff on there for your niece. Basically I think it suggests she turn around, and fold her arms, or some such. That way shes not interesting to the dog . Then when he is willing to "play nicely" she can turn back.

Thanks for all your advice :D

My niece is only 18 months so at the moment she can't stop him so it's up to me,we will definetly give the "ah-ah" a go.He is very excitable when we get visitors or we come down in the morning but i'm going to persevere.

With tiny children around, it is often worth using a houseline - it keeps the dog in closer prximity to you so you can intervene when necessary  ;)

A houseline is basically a lightweight lead, with no handle on the end, so they don't get caught on anything.... just buy a lightweight cheap lead, and cut the handle off  ;)

I was sooo consistent with my setter when she was a pup, no one was even allowed to look at her unless all 4 feet were on the ground. She never ever jumps up at visitors....

Jasper is terrible at jumping up. maybe it is a cocker thing. We tried the back turning technique but he just runs round and does it again. The only thing that works for is is every time he jumps up we shout SIT and then gives him lots of fuss, he is slowly learning that he gets fussed for sitting. Keeping him of the couch is a problem we have yet to master!

This what we do aswell he will only respond to me though?

I had my neice yesterday and he was mad we put him in the kitchen we have a gate at the door,he was barking growling yapping but as soon as we let him in the front room he jumped at her so we put him on the house line and he moaned and fought to get off it.

My niece was then crying because he had frightened her I just couldn't win!

Chester is almost 5 months and we too are trying hard (but without much success) to stop him jumping up our visitors.  It always seems that he is worse with those who expect a 5 month old puppy to behave as a fully grown and trained dog   :005:

Jasper used to jump all over everyone, now he's turned 18 months he is much better although I am sure we would got here quicker if more consistant.  When ever I let him out in the morning he knows not to jump and now comes in and onto floor for fuss.

That's not saying that he doesn't get excited by visitors but we try to get them to ignore him - especially all the children who come until they are ready to say hello.  If it's anyone I don't think would appreciate jumps, I admit I put both dogs into their beds for the duration unless my visitor says otherwise.

Having said Hello, if they then ignore him, he will go and lie down quietly (other than a couple of friends that he knows can't resist his advances).

Louie is not too bad but I'd certainly try the lead especially for tinies when they visit as they can't push away so easily.
